KATRINA'S AFTERMATH
FEMA Wants No Photos of Dead
From Reuters
September 7, 2005
LA TimesNEW ORLEANS — The U.S. agency leading Hurricane Katrina rescue efforts said Tuesday that it does not want the news media to photograph the dead as they are recovered.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency, heavily criticized for its slow response to the devastation caused by the hurricane, rejected journalists' requests to accompany rescue boats searching for storm victims.
An agency spokeswoman said space was needed on the rescue boats.
"We have requested that no photographs of the deceased be made by the media," the spokeswoman said in an e-mail.
Wonder why they didn't feel the same way after 911? It was breaking news on every channel every time a body was removed from the WTC. Of course that was helping Bush's poll numbers then. There is no political gain for Bush from the recovery of Katrina's bodies.

Psssssst! I hate to break it to you but....we don't live in IRAQ
Those men and women went to war to die for Bush , So if Bush wants to hide their bodies? it's his call. Besides , we already know the death toll as it comes in, We must honor them.
The people in N.O. did not ask to die, this is a huge disaster, the world needs to see the truth, Just like Jones town. Unless your thinking it might make Bush look bad, then go ahead and try to hide the truth as you dig yourselves an embarrasing hole , feel free to dig as deep as you want, soon the truth will be told, and the world will see how much alike Bush is to Saddam after all.
I could see an outcry over showing the corpses, but an outcry because they're not?
Only the most cynical would object to them not showing corpses.
As I've suggested before, seek help Dan.
I don't think the body picture thing came from Bush.. it's more likely some dumbass lower in the food chain.
It's about censorship. Not about getting off on watching dead humans, You Igmo's can't be that numb, Your worried about a few dead bodies, and yet you have all 6 Faces of Death VHS tapes in your collections. The only reason they don't want to show the bodies is because they want this thing to pass without getting the whole world in an uproar, They want America to forget about the horror, They are worried someone will lose there job for sure, kinda like when you hide your underwear deep in the laundry basket cuz it has a huge skid mark, Your embarrassed, and your hoping no one will find out,
I can just imagine how TV would be if most of you in here had your way, You can say good bye to Sopranos and HBO. Not to mention A&E, God forbid they show schindler's list on TV you might go into a coma.
You can't have it both ways, you show Bush when he hugs a black girl, why can't you show the black girls father in a body bag? And you talk about the democrats being flip floppers? What do you all watch 24/7? the Cartoon channel?
Those people are dead and we are all to blame, we deserve to suffer also, just be glad your not one of the bodies in the bag, so STFU, and change the channel if it bothers you like I change the channel when Bush is talking.![]()
Damn. Have any of you ever seen a body after being in water for several days? There's a reason that they don't want those pictures leading the nightly news, and it's not to cover anyone in the administration's ass, that's for sure.
When I was at A&M several of us who assisted teaching diving were recruited for the Houston area search and rescue team to be divers, before we got into it too deep they showed us some pictures of the average body recovered after different amounts of time.
That was enough for myself and pretty much everyone else not to want to face the prospect of coming face to face with after a week in the water that we said no thanks.
You want them to show the bodies, with their skin rotted and falling off? That's some sick . Half this country would be in therapy after the fact.
Knock off the partisan bull and realize they have a good reason for it.
The media doesn't want to photograph body bags.
They want to photograph bloated bodies floating in the water.
THAT'S what FEMA is wanting to crack down on.
And I don't have a problem with that one bit.
What he said...
FEMA's trying to squash dissent against hurricanes.
If we allow pictures of bodies, the hurricanes have already won.
Oh, and to add to my original thoughts, that was just a body in normal water. That's not even factoring in the toxic waste, chemicals, gasoline, and whatever else is in the water in NO.
Consider a sheriff's deputy that came into contact with the water on Monday got chemical burns from it.
Like I said, no one wants to see those pictures, and the fact that asshats like Dan are trying to make it into some sort of half-assed political issue is pretty sick.
For real?? damn!
Well, I wouldn't go that far... I think demand for images of the dead should be dictated by the audience, not FEMA. I don't think it's likely that you would see decomposed bodies on minstream news. That said, I don't think the government needs to ACCOMMODATE the Press by allowing them to accompany the rescue boats either.
Excellent point; but too logical for the dumb liberals to agree with, much less strategically derive on their own.

You guys talk a good game, But I am willing to bet If they took a picture of one of the so called bloated bodies everyone in here would click on the link at least once.
And besides , if many of you already know what a bloated body looks like? Then your just as guilty as others for looking at it yourself, now your going to lecture others? why can't those who never seen one get a look for themselves? why are you so special?
As for me it's about censorship. I don't give a rats ass about seeing a naked bloated body , If I want to see one that bad? I can get out the photo album and look at pictures of my Ex wife.
The answer to this is simple. Let the news crews film the bodies , and then put a black bar ,or blurr it out when it hits the TV. That way both sides are happy.
So if they don't show the pictures then we won?
I don't think there are any winners in this deal. If you think so, then go tell that to the people who lost many loved ones, I am sure they could use some good news.
I think you missed his joke, Mouse.
Not really , I am just waiting for the punch line

This forum was facing either a thread about FEMA concealing images of the victims or a thread about FEMA"s failure to protect the dignity of the dead and it ended up with the former.
ing awesome.

To with them bloated bodies, thats more beer for me....
Due to my diving expertise and a lack of local resources in Houston and surrounding areas, they were trying to recruit divers for search and rescue/recovery teams to be deployed in the Houston area in case of a plane crash in a lake, drownings, etc.And besides , if many of you already know what a bloated body looks like? Then your just as guilty as others for looking at it yourself, now your going to lecture others?
At the end of the recruiting process it was laid out that water and what's in it does bad things to a body, and a lot of rescuers had serious problems dealing with that. SO they said it was part of their procedures and a requirement before we could begin training that we had to see some pics - a day after submergence, a week, two weeks, a month, a year.
At the time we were all thinking "how bad could it be?" Pretty bad. One of the guys actually puked. Trust me, it's not a pleasant site - water rots the flesh, fish eat skin, chemicals eat skin, you don't want any part of that showing up on the front page of Express News.
Again, having seen it, it's not something I wish on anyone. I've already seen bodies floating face down thanks to CNN, Dallas Morning News, New York Times, etc. Don't need to see a body with the face rotted off on the front page one Sunday, and neither does the rest of America.why can't those who never seen one get a look for themselves? why are you so special?
mouse you're a funny guy and I have no ill will towards you over anything, but this is one place I think FEMA has got it right (one of the few in the aftermath of this disaster).
They definitely need to show the pictures of the rotting dead... the 250,000 or so of their traumatized relatives and children trying to recover from the worst disaster in US history.
...some of those kids might be able to recognize a parent or sibling...half a rotted face or no.
