It was also a time for the dissolution of the Soviet Union. That costs money.
What the does Obama have to show for his exponentially higher deficits?

To be honest, this ball of got rolling with Bush Jr. Not only he managed to destroy a balanced budget, he actually managed to up the economy worldwide.
But again, I'm not defending Obama or his deficits. I don't like them any more than Reagan's and the compound interest on them.
It cost nothing -- unless you think communism was a viable system to begin with.
I think I speak for all of us when I say Reagan will go down as one of the best, and I truly mean best, actors of all time. Great performance, what film as that from again?
