If Sterling commits to long term max salaries he'll have to change his whole MO. He'll no longer have leverage over guys like Brand and Odom, RFAs, that if teams make them offers they can be matched by the Clips and the player will then have to live forever in Clipper . The player will know Sterling has as much money tied up in contracts as he can stomach. Sterling's current MO requires always having excess cap available, i.e., expiring contracts, to hold over RFA's heads. He could change, become a real owner and build a team I guess.

Imagine Sterling loaded up with contracts now and Odom and Brand in RFA and unhappy. They'd be much more inclined to walk and dare Sterling to sign.

I am suggesting that Sterling will relent and re-sign his best overlal player to a max contract. He'll get his detractors off his @ss, retain one of a number of talented free agents he has this offseason, and go a long way to fufilling minimum salary requirements.

But is Sterling going to want to have $12M+ on the books for 2009?

    Not the Donald I know.

The possibility of Sterling matching an offer is the reason Brand won't go looking for one this year. He'll take the Clips one year qualifying offer and become unrestricted next year.

    If brand isnt available.

then Jermaine PJ Brown Kidd and Brad Miller are the last of the decent free agents left.

    If they all go?

    The Spurs are screwed.

We need to tell O'Neal if you don't sign with the Spurs our next choice is Miller and we'll do what it takes to sign him. Leave O'Neal with the idea if he stays in Indianna he stays without his center.

We need to get a good big man. This is our last chance for the next 5 - 6 years short of getting a miracle with a low draft choice.

Maybe you should be Captain Obvious. That scenario is probably exactly what's going to happen! Nice call.

I think AHF is right about the Manu scenario. In one respect. The Spurs have a large hispanic following, and those of you at the Alamodome on wednesday might have been as floored as me to see Manu recive what might have been the loudest ovation of the night. I love the man because I think he plays basketball the perfect way, and I love it. However, I just realized the reason my mother loves the man is not only because of the way he plays, its the same reason she loves Najera. Because they speak spanish and are latin. I am amazed at how much I underestimated the influnence this has been on alot of the hispanic fans out there, even after reading about how a whole country was up in arms over the man. I do not think this is or has been lost on the spurs front office, and I believe they will make sure he stays in our uniform simply out of the financial possibilities.

    Thanks, Manny.

You just helped me figure out why Ginobili is more popular than free beer night at Hooters in San Antonio.

The Hispanic population loves him because h's from Argentina and the Caucasian population loves him because he looks white.

And you like Jack because he sports a darker hue and a headband.

Archie Bunker is one of my former patients. Sadly enough, he would not have liked Stephen Jackson one bit.

Perhaps that is why Archie wants Jason Kidd so badly this summer. At least he is partly white, as opposed to everyone else we're considering offering a contract to.

Very astute observation, Sigmund. I wonder how popular these players would be if the world were color blind.
