Report: Patriots S Harrison out for year with torn ACL
    September 26, 2005

BRISTOL, Connecticut - It appears a dramatic victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers came at a heavy price for the New England Patriots.

ESPN is reporting that Rodney Harrison has a torn left ACL and will miss the remainder of the season.

The three-time Pro Bowl strong safety suffered the injury when Steelers receiver Cedric Wilson rolled into his left leg after being tackled in the first quarter of the Patriots' 23-20 win at Pittsburgh. Harrison was carted off the field and looked like a player who knew his season was over.
The Patriots have not yet confirmed the severity of the injury. Coach Bill Belichick said the MRI results on Harrison's knee would be disclosed on Tuesday.

Harrison, 32, is regarded as the heart and soul of the Patriots' secondary. After starting cornerbacks Ty Law and Tyrone Poole suffered injuries last season and missed the playoffs, Harrison held the secondary together and helped the Patriots win their second straight Super Bowl.

However, it appears he will not be able to help them try to become the first NFL team to win three consecutive Super Bowls.

Ironically, Harrison suffered the injury on the field where he enjoyed one of his career highlights, returning an interception 87 yards for a touchdown in the Patriots' 41-27 win over the Steelers in last January's AFC championship game.

Harrison spent nine years with the San Diego Chargers before signing with the Patriots in 2003. He was named to the Pro Bowl for the third time last season after leading the Patriots with 138 tackles and also had three sacks and two interceptions. Harrison had 13 tackles in parts of three games this season.

Left tackle Matt Light, a member of all three of the Patriots' Super Bowl-winning teams over the last four years, also underwent an MRI on Monday.

Light injured his right ankle after teammate Logan Mankins rolled into his leg on a running play in the first quarter and was also carted off the field.

Light has started 62 straight games at left tackle since being drafted in the second round in 2001.

Adam Vinatieri's 43-yard field goal with one second left lifted New England to Sunday's win, snapping the Steelers' 16-game regular season winning streak.

I usually feel bad for a player when something like this happens. But I don't think I'll be shedding any tears over this one.

You know, somehow the Patriots will probably be alright. They won with Rodney Harrison and they won without him. The loss of Bruschi would have concerned me more (were I a Pats fan), but they seem to have made up for that as well.

The way that team kept its poise and actually improved over the course of their game yesterday in Pittsburgh should be scary to the rest of the league. They walked into one of the toughest places in football to play, lost two key pieces of their team, and still still found a way to get over on the Steelers. The Pats are more resilient than any team in the league, better prepared than any team, as well-balanced as any team, and have the best leadership (on the sidelines and the field) of any team.

They do it right; they should be fine.

I don't wish injury on any player but I imagine Trent Green was saying what Brewski was saying about Karma.

Gotta agree with this one, Harrison is one of the dirtiest players in the league.
