Still remember that Knicks-Rockets Game 7.

For what it's worth, since some of you may wonder. I think I got the facts correctly.
So far, the home team for games 6 and 7 has won 3 series of 7 when down 3-2 since 2-3-2 format began in 1985. Home team has not yet lost a game 7. All series that went 7 games had close games in games 6 and 7 except for Game 6, 2010, Lakers vs Celtics which was a blowout win for LA.
1985 Boston lost game 6 against Lakers
1988 Lakers won game 6 and game 7 against Detroit
1993 Phoenix lost game 6 to Chicago
1994 Houston won game 6 and game 7 against New York
1998 Utah lost game 6 against Chicago
2006 Dallas lost game 6 against Miami
2010 Lakers won game 6 and game 7 vs. Boston
In the series the home team lost in 6, most games were close:
1985 Lakers pretty much stayed ahead most of the way by about 8-10 points
1993 Phoenix lost by 1
1998 Utah lost by 1
2006 Mavs lost by 3
No road team has won a finals game 7 since the Washington Bullets did in 1978.
Verdict? Expect a close game 6. Both teams are capable of winning, it comes down to who wants it most. right now, odds are in the Mavs favor. If they lose game 6, the odds tip heavily to Miami, except it should be close again.

1988 still haunts me.
The questionable foul call on Laimbeer on a Kareem skyhook at the end of game 6 was painful.
Go look at the replay. When Kareem went for his shot, Worthy snuck around Rodman and had an easy putback of the missed shot, but since the whistle had sounded, he just kept going away from the basket. Hope that helps ease the pain.
I get what you mean ...I feel the same about ralph Sampson's tip shot in 1986, AND Horry's miss that rolled in and out in 2003 ...
We probably wouldnt of beat the spurs or rockets anyway but still hurts ...
This one is most like the Rockets/Knicks series no doubt.
"2006 Miami won game 6 against Dallas"
Isn't the list suppose to be from the home team's perspective? Otherwise it's very confusing.
Should be 2006 Dallas lost game 6 against Miami.
Are the other ones in that list from the home team's perspective?
Good point, I corrected it. Thank you.
Of course if Miami wins game 6, throw all this out. It then becomes a stat of game 7's in the finals. Washington 1978, Boston 1969 and 1974 were the last road teams to do it, maybe the only ones. Add in 1984 and 2005 for starters. I am certain there are more where the home team won.
I wonder with regards to the "winner of game 3 when tied 1-1" stat, how many of those "11 out of 11" teams were down 3-2?
Very good point.
1985 Lakers won game 3 at home against Boston, won in 6.
1988 Lakers won game 3 at Detroit, won in 7.
1990 Detroit won game 3 at Portland, won in 5.
1991 Chicago won game 4 in at LA, won in 5.
1992 Chicago won game 3 at Portland, won in 6.
1994 Houston won game 3 at New York, won in 7,
1998 Chicago won game 3 at home against Utah, won in 6
2001 Lakers won game 3 at Philadelphia, won in 5.
2003 San Antonio won game 3 at New Jersey, won in 6.
2004 Detroit won game 3 at home against Lakers, won in 5.
2010 Lakers won game 3 at Boston, won in 7.
So the teams that won game 3 when tied 1-1 but trailed 3-2 going into last two games at home were:
1988 Lakers: won in 7
1994 Houston: won in 7
2010 Lakers: won in 7.
So maybe 11 out of 11 should be replaced by 3-3 for this situation? A few of those teams that won after starting 1-1 were clearly far superior to who they played. 3 of them swept on the road and won in 5. This finals is very close to an even match.
Nice stat work. I tried to look that up but couldn't get it to spit out what I wanted. Thanks.
That is interesting as I was betting that maybe only 1 time out of the 11 did a team that won game 3, end up losing the next two. The fact it happened 3 times is wild.
There were injuries in some 3:2 finals.
In 1988 Isiah sprained his ankle down in game 6, and didn't play well in game 7.
In 2010, Perkins went down early in game 6, which the Celtics lost badly, and in a close game 7, Perkins couldn't play.
It won't be easy for Miami to win both games, I would say that the Mavs could finally win their first championship. Dirk has been phenomenal so far, he deserves it.
