As a US fan, I'd say beating Spain in the '09 Confederations Cup was about equal to what beating Mexico in a beginning of cycle Gold Cup final would be.
I call BS on Mexicans would rather beat Argentina. The only cir stance that would be true would be in the World Cup, in which case as a US fan I'd rather see the US beat (insert whoever we are playing) over beating Mexico in the Gold Cup.
Mexico beating Argentina in a friendly is nowhere near as important as losing to the US in a WCQ or Gold Cup.
Beating Argentina in a friendly might be better than beating the US in a friendly - but the US and Mexico usually play each other in 3 or 4 meaningful games each cycle (depending if the side playing in the Confederations Cup bothers to send a real team to the Gold Cup before the World Cup), and I venture to say those are bigger than any friendly that either side might play. Thoughts, El Tri fans?

Of course it's a game, but why would you ever root against your own country? That's probably why so many Americans are racist against Mexican Immigrants because they don't assimilate. Same reason so many people hate guidos in New York because they don't assimilate. They aren't really Italian but they'd pick Italy over the U.S. anyday for any reason.
I remember a while back when people were protesting something immigration related, the protestors were flying Mexico's flag. It's the same thing and I don't get it.
I grew up watching Monterrey, going to games while visiting my family (who ALL live in Mexico), being absolutely devastated for the first time in my life after the Bulgaria game in 94, going insane after the "Si se puede" games vs Belgium and Holland in 98, then being 1-0 up on Germany with 30 minutes left. I watch every single Mexico game, friendly or WC, wherever I may be in the world. I've done it since I can remember
And now all of a sudden I'm supposed to change all of that and root for the USA because NOW this ing country is starting to like soccer? Don't ing think so
It really has nothing to do with the final match or a friendly concept of it.
The truth is, since 2008, Mexico has had the tools to beat the U.S., the managers have just done a horrible job of putting the pieces together.. until now. The team still has a lot to work on, but given that we have given Argentina troubles in the past, and teams like Brazil.. I would much rather have a win against either of those teams than a gold cup finals win against the U.S.
Anyone who knows anyone about soccer would've predicted Mexico to win Saturday... It was really an easy pick, and although they struggled to score the first couple of minutes and the US capitalized on it.. they were still the better team and they proved it.
I can't say Mexico is better than Argentina and Brazil for obvious reasons, but I know this team has what it takes to be on their level... or close to it.
Beating them would be the only way to find out.. beating the U.S. however, would prove what we already know.

I don't care. The only reason I watched is because there is absolutely nothing else on. I'd rather watch NFL europe but that doesn't exist anymore so...
I just don't understand how Americans can root for a different team. Then again maybe it's because I love my country.
I know quite a few Brit descendants that root first and foremost for the UK too... As generations go by those ties end up fading away though...

But don't you think it should? That's not their home country. In time, it'll end up not even being their parents' home country.
It's only natural to develop a certain loyalty to the country where you've been raised. Especially if the liberties and freedoms of that country have afforded you opportunities to be successful. Opportunities that certainly wouldn't be available in many other countries, namely Mexico.
You don't have to kiss the Great Seal every morning, but it's puzzling to see people who live, work and reap all the benefits of the US fly Mexican flags and show little to no respect towards the US.
There's a certain pride that comes with watching "your" country's team beat an opposing country's team. So it's disingenuous, at best, for Mexican fans to claim this was simply a soccer game. It was seemingly the Big Bad USA getting pummeled by lowly Mexico.
There's an overt and inveterate hatred between fans of El Tri and the US soccer team. And it has little to do with soccer.
You have to remember that a few vatos are set to only be here temporarily. They come to make their money and they're going back after X amount of time to seemingly live like kings back in Mexico. Some mexicans do it every winter, some do it after 5-10 years, others after 10-20 years.
There's obviously a good chunk that does stay, and those are normally the ones that end up embracing the US culture, especially as generations go by.
It just seems like Mexicans, more so than immigrants from other countries, don't want to embrace US culture. They love everything about the US, except for the US. I never quite understood that.

What you don't seem to understand it, rooting for the Mexican NT is kind of part of our heritage. It might sound stupid and I really don't expect you to understand, for obvious reasons... but there is a huge difference in the way Americans and Mexicans see soccer. I was raised watching soccer from ever since I can remember, and throughout my life I've been a huge fan of this Mexican squad. Why should I change it now? Because you tell me I'm supposed to or I'm not being loyal to my country? What the kind of bull argument is that?
What the does rooting for the Mexican soccer team have anything to do with the loyalty I have for this country? That's just plain ridiculous.
There's Anglo Americans as it is that don't even bother watching American games, are you trying to blame us for the USMNT's failure?

How about the US fan group Sam's army with who go to games chanting "Mow My Lawn" you expect us to support that ? gtfo. Lowly Mexico beating Big Bad USA? Mexico has Pummled USA 35 times now while US has only done it what 15 times? So maybe you have it the other way around.
There are many reasons for that, and they're more political than anything...
It has a lot to do with immigration laws, racism.. etc.

For that to change, Americans would have to do some change, and we all know that will never happen.
Most of my friends, Latinos of course.. born and raised in the U.S. with parents who were born and raised in the U.S. were cheering for Mexico on Saturday.
Most of these people will more than likely have kids who will also cheer for Mexico, it's going to happen.. that doesn't mean they won't embrace what they have in the U.S. or that they're not loyal to the U.S. . Most of them are going to college or have already developed a career, are good citizens, and just good Americans over all.. cheering for something that has been part of their heritage doesn't mean they don't appreciate what they have now. Not rooting for Donovan or Clint won't make them bad Americans in any way, that's just ridiculous to even mention.
I don't know where you were born or raised, or what type of culture you grew up with. And i'm certainly not asking you, or telling you that you should change who you root for. It just seems that, over time, people born and raised in the US wouldn't need to be asked to root for the US.
You seem to identify with Mexican culture and how Mexican's view their Soccer team. It's part of Mexican heritage. It's a source of pride. Yet you claim it's only soccer.
