Well, I favor the Cardinals by a very wide margin.

Padres may win a game with Peavy on the mound, maybe two if he wrecks hard. Peavy could even potentially pitch game 1&3, but no doubt will pitch 1&4(if it gets that far).

I hardly see how the Padres will beat the Cardinals. Cardinals are too strong for them.

I think 1 & 3 is definitely not going to happen. 1 & 4 is possible, but I still don't think they'd do that to a pitcher in round one. If they went on, it'll screw them in later rounds.

Peavy pitching games 1 and 4 is pretty likely, depending on how the series stands. No sense saving a guy for the offseason. No way he pitches 1 and 3 though. No one pitches a guy on that little rest, his arm would fall off. I don't think I've ever even heard of a guy going on that little rest, much less in the first round of the playoffs.

Having him pitch games 1&4 takes the Padres (and any team) from the regular 5 man rotation to a 3 man rotation. Now, it all depends on the splits between the games, and the playoffs could make it the equivalent of a 5 man - but, you won't find many managers that are going to risk a young guy's career like that, especially in round one.

It does take a toll. An arm is torn up after a game.

Peavy could easily win that game, plus Carpenter has been stinking it up lately.

Teams typically use a four man rotation in the playoffs anyhow, with the travelling days. I guess with a five game series, you might as well save him for game five though. Pitching him game four down 2-1 in the series doesn't do you much good, you have to win game five too. And pitching him game four up 2-1 makes less sense, might as well save him and pitch him in game 5 on regular rest.

I wouldn't be shocked to see him go one and four though. Aces pretty commonly go one and four (and seven) in the LCS or WS. As long as his pitch count's not too high in game one, it's possible.

A lot of it also depends on the strength of your fourth starter. I'll be surprised if Houston doesn't go to a three man rotation by the second round. Our top three (Pet te, Oswalt, Clemens) are leaps and bounds better than four (Backe) and five (Rodriguez). I do expect Backe to start game four of the first round though.

Peavy pitching 1&3 is no problem, it would be 3 days rest. They use it so often in the playoffs it is a way of life.

Don't think they would, but 3 days rest is no problem.

You're joking right? No one ever pitches one and three. With the extra day of rest in there I could see one and four. He can only pitch two games in the series anyhow, what's the point in burning through him so early? Absolutely NO way he pitches one and three.

And three days rest is a big problem this early in the playoffs.

I guess you didn't get the part where I said "don't think they would"

But 3 days is no problem in the playoffs. 1st round or World Series, makes no difference. It is the playoffs.

    Relax.

Of course you have to say "you don't think they would". That way when it doesn't happen you can pretend like you still have a clue what the is going on. I'm saying there's no chance. At all.

I just noted the possibilty that he could go on 3 days rest. I am not Bruce Bochy nor can predict future events that might cause such a thing.

I watched the middle innings of that game and believe that Bochy lost the game for his team in the top of the 5th. With 1 out and a runner on first, down 4-0, Bochy let Peavy hit for himself -- well, asked Peavy to bunt the runner over. I have a big problem with that strategy; if Peavy succeeds, you have a runner at 2nd with 2 outs, but you're still down 4-0 and, with Carpenter pitching, are facing an uphill battle even to get that runner home. Why not call it a day for Peavy after he bounced back from a bad 3rd with a good 4th inning, and pinch hit there? If you hit for Peavy, you sacrifice your #1 starter, but you'll have him in Game 4 if you get that far, and can pretty much ensure that Peavy would be available to pitch 9 in that game. You play for the win right then and there.

Instead, Peavy bunts foul with 2 strikes, Roberts ends the top of the 5th, and a shaky Peavy takes the mound in the bottom of the inning, gives up a cheapy to Edmonds, loads the bases, and then gives up an absolute bomb to Sanders. 8-0 and game over.

oooo, our 11th pitcher, who only comes in in blowouts and hasn't pitched in a long time had a tough game.

    Got lucky??

It was tougher than it looked.

Loretta, Hernandez, and Randa were pains in the butt.

The Padre's bullpen is DAMN good.

Im hoping the Cardinals widen the payroll next year and sign Trevor Hoffman.

hed be fantastic closing games out, and letting Isringhausen set up.

Other FAs that they arent gonna resign that are great players

    Brian Giles, Ramon Hernandez.

Those two guys would make anytime alot better.

Giles though seems to be on the downside, but is still solid.

Hernandez, if he can stay healthy, is a freakin all star.
