Fighting Sioux seems less offensive to me than Red Raider, fwiw.....Sometimes political correctness doesn’t win.
By now some of you are aware of the years-long plight of the University of North Dakota. The school’s mascot has been the Fighting Sioux since before World War II. They adopted it in honor of the Indian tribes that were prevalent in northeast North Dakota. They received the blessing of those tribes and went about their existence for most of the rest of the 20th century without incident.
Until the NCAA put UND’s Fighting Sioux on a list of team nicknames that had to be changed because they were deemed offensive. St. John’s went from the Redmen to the Red Storm. Marquette is no longer the Warriors but now the Golden Eagles. Every school complied with the NCAA’s wishes.
Except the University of North Dakota. They have fought it every step of the way. And they have lost.
