Game Thread: Spurs @ Kings - Nov 9, 2012

We're playing a gross game out there. They need to clean it up, a lot. Way too many turnovers and players trying to finish with lackadaisical efforts.

My money on the reason why the Spurs are struggling:

Pop didn't like how hot they were record-wise to begin the year. Spurs are a team that historically starts off slow and turns it on late. Pop feared the worst (media attention) and told them to tank this roadtrip. Most logical reason I can think of.

Kawai looks like he is in an awkward stage in his career. He knows he has the tools to play at the next level, but his inability to use those tools is making him worse than he was when he was content on playing as a role player. He'll come around.

I see Kawhi as an important role playing piece on a contending team and nothing more. I've been pretty disappointed every time he's tried to assert himself as a playmaker.

His handles are actually quite mediocre for a player of his size. I never feel like he's in complete control when handling the ball (usually in the open court).

Defense definitely picked up in the 2nd quarter, started with the 2nd unit. Wonder if this means he's trying to give everyone a good amount of minutes so no one sits out tomorrow, 2nd unit played a good amount of minutes in the 2nd

Blair can't even help himself when the Spurs are trying to showcase him.

I realize we're playing the Kings, but I think our defense this early in the season is better than last year's already.

Agreed. Defensively, we look really good.

Offensively, not so much, but we'll come around.

He was an important role player on a contending team last year. He was a rookie, you don't think he can improve to be something more?

Kawhi will be fine. Before coming to the NBA he was more of a post player than a perimeter player.

Let's hope for a cleaner second half. If the Spurs can improve to about 80%, this should be a blowout.

Oh I'm sure he can improve, but can he improve enough to fill the shoes of an all star-caliber "face of the franchise" type player that Pop wants? I doubt it. I hope so but I doubt it.

Tony engaging in another non-screen and roll with Dejuan Blair. Ends in a 1 on 1 attempt, and Kawhi has to clean up the glass for us to score.

I'd really like to see some actual screening and actual penetration from our guards (especially Tony and Manu).

Our transition offense is fine.

Our half court offense is so uninspired and stale right now. Our screen and rolls are so ineffective. I don't get it. This doesn't look anything like the '11-'12 Spurs offense.
