Baynes did a really good interview over the radio here this morning, It will probably end up online as the station who broadcast it does tend to put up their lead interviews made more interesting is one of the 3 guys speaking to him was Andrew Gaze so a bit of old school Spur talk as well.
did he mention anything about his visa?

    The coach behind Baynes

The Cairns Taipans' Aaron Fearne is the best development coach in Australia "by far" says a leading sports agent and a big reason why Aron Baynes is in the NBA.

As Aaron Fearne purposefully paced the sidelines of the Cairns Taipans practice court on Thursday morning, Aron Baynes had his first taste of what it's like to be a San Antonio Spur.

Everywhere in the world, except America it seems, reads birthdays DAY/MONTH/YEAR. For some reason the USA put it out of order and goes MONTH/DAY/YEAR. Regardless, 12/9/86 and 9.12.86 are the same date, point in fact.

And besides, if he was born December 1986 he'd be 26. But if he was born a whole 3 months earlier in September 1986, he'd still be 26. It's a moot point.

The fact that the article says hes 27 is obviously just a simple math error.
I don't live in the United States, so I'm familiar with both ways of listing dates, but yeah simple math error seems the obvious answer. Brain fart on my part. Thanks for clearing it up for me.

Jeff McDonald ‏@JMcDonald_SAEN Aron Baynes' signing gives the Spurs an NBA-high seven players who competed in the 2012 London Olympics. None of them are Americans.

This photo is going around from the Herald Sun:

That isn't Baynes in the photo, lol

how funny was it when Tim Watson (legend of Australian Football BTW) asked him if they had retired Gazes spot on the bench and hung it from the rafters...

Or is that Aussie humor that doesn't translate?

I have almost zero expectations for this guy. He's simply a large body; every year the Spurs enter the preseason with more prospects who have more individual strengths than Baynes. Maybe one is a crazy athlete, another lit it up from beyond the arc in summer league. One has a prototypical athletic PF body, the next guy has the potential to be the backup defensive long SF the Spurs' fans beg for.

Aron Baynes is simply a tall guy with an NBA body, a third string point guard and an assistant coach who can vouch he isn't a dolt.

And yet I have this gut feeling that this signing is about to really pay off.

Really? Ahead of Dawkins, Dr. J, Dominique, Jordan, Vince Carter, etc?
I wouldn't say that. Of course he is the only 7 footer to do an in-game 360 dunk.

Spurs are the worst offensive rebounding team. While a reason of it is Spurs putting an emphasis on stopping fast breaks, it's also because of a lack of skills in that area. Baynes, who was the best offensive rebounder in Euroleague this season, could surely help Spurs to solve that weakness.
Your first sentence is a really general statement and not really sure if it's a comparison or........... I think that Baynes is a low post man, but have to admit, that pretty much comes from comments on here and some local media, not research, because I hold ST members in the highest esteem. This would allow Timmy to be more mobile, but isn't that job cinched up by Splitter this year? I really don't see Pop deviating from using TS almost exclusively with TD. In his maturity(old age) Pop appears to be moving toward pairings imho. With Diaw being a comfortable 3rd big I wonder if this leaves Baynes out in the cold this year? My point is that I don't think Baynes will fit on the court with Splitter, and with Tiago tied to Duncan, who you think AB will fit on the court with?

Dude sounds more like he's from Liverpool than Australia.

    And that's a good thing.

I'm sure Mills is having a blast sitting all alone at the end of the bench.
all of us would kill to be in his position making three figure salary and front court seats to every Spurs game. Hey how money do you make in a NBA season?

I meant, Spurs are the worst offensive rebounding team in the NBA:
    http://www.basketball-reference.com/....html#misc::13

They are 30th in ORB% with 20.9%. If they continue to be that bad, they will be the second worst defensive rebounding of the NBA history after last year Celtics.

The explanation of that very low number is quite straight forward:
    - Spurs perimeter players are focused on getting back on defense instead of going after offensive rebounds. That's Pop wish.
    - Bonner and Diaw are mostly playing on the perimeter offensively and don't get offensive rebounds.
    - Splitter and Duncan are getting some offensive rebounds but they aren't really skilled in that area.
    - Blair has a knack for getting offensive rebounds but he doesn't play.

From his stats and from what I've seen from him, Baynes goes hard after offensive rebounds. That's a skill/attribute that will be welcomed given Spurs weakness in that area.

With Diaw being a comfortable 3rd big I wonder if this leaves Baynes out in the cold this year? My point is that I don't think Baynes will fit on the court with Splitter, and with Tiago tied to Duncan, who you think AB will fit on the court with?
Baynes should fit well with Diaw, Bonner and small ball (Kawhi/Jack at PF). Saying that, I don't expect him to play a lot. Spurs primary PF/C rotation should remain Duncan/Splitter/Diaw. Baynes could get some minutes outside garbage time when one of Duncan or Splitter won't be available because of an injury, DNP-rest, foul troubles... He could also be used in some match-ups like against Dwight Howard.

You Mean, Lamont HAD a knack for getting offensive rebounds so now he doesn't play.
