Apparently the Amendola deal was agreed to on Tuesday before the Welker to Denver talk. Now it's starting to make sense how this happened. Welker was asking for 8-9 million, Belichick went with his contingency plan because he expected a re ed team to give Welker 8-9 million a year, and then it was too late once Welker figured out he was only gonna get 6 million since having him and Amendola would be re ed.
That explains how everything transpired, but it makes Belichick look even more stupid for buying into the bull that Welker would get 8-9 million in the open market. I said all along he wouldn't get close to that regardless of how many receptions he had.
I feel bad for Williams. He's a good guy. It's gonna suck watching him sink on the Dream Team Redux.

Here's my honest opinion as honest as I can make it:
If the Pats let Welker go because they don't want to pay when they already have Edelman, that would make absolutely perfect sense from a cap standpoint.
But it's re ed to offer a less proven player with no chemistry with Brady more money.
Happy for Danny getting paid at the expense of the stupid Pats, feel bad for Wes getting financially ed, although getting passes from PM will be pretty cool.

Amendola's contract saves them cap space (initially) over Welker's contract. The fact they agreed w/ Amendola before they had any idea they could get Welker for 6 million a year also explains this one.
Amendola's cap figure for the next two years will be lower than Welker's cap figure. Welker's contract is also entirely guaranteed while Amendola's is only 33% guaranteed.
How did Welker get financially ed? He got the best available deal in the open market. Is it really that hard to wrap your brain around the reality no team thought Welker was worth more than 6 million a season? Did the Patriots owe him more than his market value because he's such a tough lil' guy?
btw the contract NE offered Welker was incentive laden and could have gotten him to the 8-9 million range, but i guess he wasn't so confident he could reach those performance levels. I guess if "don't drop routine passes in playoff games" was an incentive, it makes sense to turn that offer down.
New England had better use every last dollar of cap room because that's their only excuse. Brady obviously did his deal to help keep Wes.....not help send him to a rival QB.
He may have ed himself since he signed so quick. Wes deserves a long term deal if anyone does because he's been incredibly productive. Life ain't fair sometimes. Long term deals are given out based on expected future production, not past production. Teams don't pay players for what they've already done. This concept seems to evade you like any remotely analytical concept evades Wild Cobra.

This whole thing was personal and not in the best interest of the team, plain and simple. Any argument you or the pats make otherwise is Wild Cobra weak.

Welker is one of many veterans Brady has seen leave the team in spite of him taking a contract well below what he'd get on the open market. Maybe he's a little disappointed, but he's not pissed.

Whatever personal grudge there was between the Patriots and Welker has nothing to do with why the 31 other teams in the NFL didn't want to offer him more than what he got. They moved on and went after Amendola on Tuesday because they thought Welker would command 8-9 million a year (which was obviously a re ed conjecture on their part). If they thought they could get Welker for 2 years/12 million before they committed to Amendola, they would have done so.

Neither me nor mono claim it didn't get personal, that's just not what led to them choosing Amendola. They chose Amendola before they knew they could have Welker for the same price.
