Arsenal record bid for £30m Gotze as Wenger brings on kids (again)
Arsene Wenger is embarking on a twin strategy to revive Arsenal this summer by making a club record £30million bid for Borussia Dortmund's Mario Gotze while promoting a clutch of promising youngsters.
Wenger is ready to spend the £70m transfer fund at his disposal but that figure also has to cover the wages of new players, with Dortmund's 20-year-old attacking midfielder the prime target.
Gotze has a £30m buyout clause which would allow him to leave if a club make a bid to that value - and Arsenal are ready to do so.
Target: Mario Gotze is a target for Arsenal boss Wenger
Wenger is also considering a £10m move for Toulouse midfielder Etienne Capoue and he wants to sign a keeper, with Liverpool's Pepe Reina the strongest candidate.
The expected outlay marks a huge departure of policy for Arsenal, but Wenger will continue to promote youngsters.
Gedion Zelalem, a 16-year-old German with an Ethiopian father, has been training with the first team and is expected to be promoted to the squad next season.
Hector Bellerin, an 18-year-old right-back from Barcelona, and Serge Gnabry, a 17-year-old midfielder from Stuttgart, are also likely to be fast-tracked.
But it is Zelalem, discovered playing high school football in the USA, who will attract most attention as he is likely to emulate Cesc Fabregas and Jack Wilshere by making his debut in the Capital One Cup team next season.
The new Fabregas: Gedion Zelalem in action for Arsenal under-21s
Zelalem was not even attached to a professional side when he was spotted by Arsenal's US scout, Danny Karbassiyoon, but plays in the same position as Wilshere and Fabregas.
His father - Zelalem Woldyes - was granted asylum in Germany, where his son was born.
Though the youngster was enrolled in Hertha Berlin's youth programme, the family moved to Washington DC in 2006, where he was playing for Walter Johnson High School when he came to Arsenal's attention.
Impressive debut: Gedion Zelalem takes the field
Zelalem made an impressive debut for Arsenal in the Under-21 team against Liverpool on Monday.
Arsenal youth coach Steve Gatting said: 'He came out of it with a lot of credit.
He's only 16 and that was the first game he's played for the club at a compe ive level, and what a place to make your debut. 'He came out of it well.
He's got a bit of presence on the pitch.' Zelalem has been selected for Germany at youth team level but has also trained with the USA, where he is applying for citizenship.

Gedion Zelalem plays in the same midfield position as Jack Wilshere and Cesc Fabregas and could take the same route into the Arsenal side, via the Capital One Cup.
Zelalem , 16, was born in Germany after his Ethiopian father was given asylum.
His mother died in 2005 and the family moved the next year to America, where he was discovered playing for Walter Johnson High School.
Where the would Gotze fit in? I find it laughable to even consider, although he's one of the most exciting young midfield talents in the world
Hope Zelalem lives up to the hype. Also hope he decides to play for the US national side once he gets his citizenship

Zelalem certainly didn’t disappoint. Despite the Gunners suffering a 3-2 defeat in an enthralling encounter which renders very difficult their chances of progressing to the end of season play-offs, Zelalem was an extremely calm presence on the ball throughout, frequently dictating play from his role as Arsenal’s most advanced midfielder. An extremely skilful player, one through ball he played to fellow German youth international Serge Gnabry was particularly notable in portraying his vision and commendable ability to wriggle his way out of the most difficult situations.
It wasn’t all perfect- with Zelalem evidently tiring late on (understandably so given his lack of game-time in recent weeks) and also hitting a few mis-placed passes, but the early evidence was extremely encouraging for the future, and the fact that he was selected from the start for the U21s, having not yet featured at U18 level, speaks volumes of how highly he is regarded within the club, as does the fact that he has trained with the first-team on several occasions this season, increasingly so in recent weeks.
Love handles getting his drink on and acting like a .

Starting lineup vs. Fulham:
ARSENAL: Szczesny, Sagna, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Monreal, Arteta, Ramsey, Rosicky, Cazorla, Walcott, Giroud
Subs: Mannone, Vermaelen, Jenkinson, Gibbs, Coquelin, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Podolski
Wenger is an idiot. Get on Pod for that French Bendtner and Ox for Theo.
"It's physical, and too direct. I prefer possession football and playing it on the floor," Vela, who spent the latter half of the 2010-11 season on loan at West Bromwich Albion, one of five clubs Arsenal shipped him out to, said, adding Sociedad coach Philippe Montanier's positioning of him was the factor behind his impressive strike rate.
