It also got the story wrong. Texas A&M was formed in 1876. Texas was formed in 1883.

There are a large number of Aggies that disagree with Perry on this issue from what I've read.

Akina and Searels saw 2015 S Justin Dunning of Whitehouse this week. Quotes from him (24/7):

“Texas stopped by to check me out at school,” Dunning said. “It was the defensive backs coach, Coach (Duane) Akina and the offensive line coach, Coach (Stacey) Searels.”

“They did give me a camp brochure for this summer,”
Dunning said. “Coach Akina told my coach that he really liked what he saw from me yesterday. He said he is going to go back to Texas and tell Coach (Mack) Brown and (Patrick) Suddes that he liked me a lot.”

“They told my coach that I should expect to get a bunch of offers real soon with spring ball starting up,”
said Dunning. “They sort of hinted to my coach about offering me down the line. Coach Akina told my coach that they really liked me, (Larry) Pryor and Deionte (Thompson) for defensive backs in 2015.”

“They did discuss other options for me,” he said. “They told my coach that I might be a linebacker if I continue to grow. They also said due to my athleticism, I could easily be a wide receiver at the next level. I’m a football player. I’m going to ball where ever I end up playing. I don’t care where I play, I just want to play.”

“I don’t have any favorites just yet,”
explained Dunning. “But I’m looking at Texas Tech quite a bit. They’ve offered me and are recruiting me the hardest. I’m also planning on seeing more of Baylor, Texas A&M, Oklahoma LSU and, of course, Texas.”

“Right now Texas isn’t as high as they used to be, but I still like them. If they did end up offering me, it would probably change things for me.”

Update on 2015 CB Kendall Sheffield of Fort Bend Marshall (24/7):

“Right now Texas, Texas A&M, LSU Oklahoma and Baylor are standing out to me,” Sheffield said. “That’s in no specific order though. I have offers from all five and like them all. They’re all good schools.”

“(Defensive backs) Coach Akina is a great coach. I really like his money wall. He’s put a lot of guys in the NFL while there at Texas and that is exciting. I like that a lot. It stands out to me that they put quality DBs in the league.”

“I like Coach (Marcel) Yates a lot. He actually came to my school yesterday. He and Coach (Clarence) McKinney are both good guys. I really like their facilities (at A&M), too.”

“The main thing I like about them (LSU) is that they’re known for putting defensive backs in the NFL and that they have a great DB coach.”

“Oklahoma is a really good school when it comes to football. Plus I like Coach (Bob) Stoops a lot and think he’s a good coach.”

“They (Baylor) are a program on the rise. They have a good defensive backs coach. I’m looking forward to visiting them this summer to learn more about them.”

“The thing that is most important me when making my decision will be academics,”
said Sheffield. “That’s the biggest deal. Besides that, I want a defense that really fits me. I want one that really uses my abilities as a player the best. The other thing is coaching, that’s important as well. I want great coaches.”

“I have no clue when I would like to even make one (a commitment),”
he said. “My recruitment will probably play out for a while. I want to be sure of my choice when I make it. I just don’t know when I want to do that.”

2015 S Deionte Thompson of West Orange-Stark reviews his visit to Alabama for their spring game (HornsNation):

    "It was great,"
said Thompson, who competed in the Texas Class 3A Region III track and field championships with his West Orange-Stark teammates over the weekend. "Tony Brown came with me. We talked to a lot of other recruits, two of the other commits from the Class of 2015. We watched the game, saw some stuff where they need to improve on and what they're good at, so it was a great time going out there and having fun."

"There were so many people there,"
Thompson said. "I went to Texas' spring game and [Alabama's] had twice the people there. It was just a great time, the crowd loved the game, everybody loved it."

"They were just telling me that they can use me in a couple years and that they're going to be low at the safety spot, so I can come right in and get a fair share of playing time,"
    Thompson said.

"Coach [Bo] Davis at Texas has been on me pretty hard," Thompson said. "I talk to him a lot. And Coach [Terry] Price at Texas A&M, he's been hitting me up."

"Texas and Alabama, for sure," Thompson said. "And some other camps hopefully."

Quotes from DE Andrew Williams of McDonough, GA (HornsNation):

“At this point my family and I are trying to make a top 10 so we can shorten down our list,” he said. “I don’t want to prolong any relationships with coaches that I’m not going to visit. It’s going to happen very soon.”

“Oh absolutely, Coach [Stacy] Searels came by on [April 25],”
Williams said. “We couldn’t talk very much but it was great seeing him and Coach [Oscar] Giles. They told me, which really surprised me, that I was their No. 1 DE. It didn’t register with me. Texas has a lot of great athletes. Our relationship has grown a lot this year so that was great.”

    “Absolutely that is huge,”
Williams said. “The fact that they came all the way to Georgia to tell me I was their No. 1 defensive end really speaks volumes. Texas is definitely one of the schools that I want to visit this summer.”

“A school like Texas, what got me interested in them, without knowing anything about the school, was when Coach Giles and Coach Searels put themselves in the school,”
Williams said. “That really caught my eye and makes me want to visit them.”

Quote from 2016 RB Kameron Martin of Port Arthur Memorial (high school of Jamaal Charles). He's a name to remember:

“I hate to say this but if Texas ever offered me a scholarship I’m going to commit,” Martin said. “Nobody that I ever talked to ever knew that I liked Texas. My whole room is Texas. My room is painted orange. I have two banners up, Jamal Charles’ signature. Everything in my room is Texas.”

Quotes from S Mookie Carlile of Stephenville (24/7):

“I sent out my highlight film to Texas in January,” Carlile said. “Then I got an invite to a spring practice in the mail in February. A couple of days before I planned on going to a practice, I messaged Coach (Duane) Akina on Facebook to let him know I was coming. He then told me to call him and he invited to go to their Sop re/Junior Day.”

“It was awesome,” he said. “Texas has always been my favorite team since I was little, so getting to check everything out and getting to talk with Coach Akina and Coach (Manny) Diaz was really cool.”

“They like to have a good time, but when it’s time to get after it, they are really intense,” Carlile said. “Coach Akina is a great motivator. It always seemed like the defensive backs were having a great time just practicing.”

“Coach Akina said that I’m definitely on his radar,” Carlile said. “He told me that on his trip to Dallas-Fort Worth he’s going to stop by Stephenville and watch me practice. He also invited me to go to the June 2 minicamp this summer, which I plan on attending. Since I went (to junior day), we keep in touch every week or so.”

“Texas is definitely my favorite school,” Carlile said. “They’re up top. I like Texas Tech and Oklahoma State a lot too.”

Quotes from OL Blake Blackmar of Houston Clear Lake (OrangeBloods):

"I guess it was last Tuesday. There was a bunch of coaches there at our practice. The TCU coach was out there. I had gone up there for a visit and he went and talked to my dad," Blackmar said. "When he left all other coaches came over and talked to my dad."

"Coach Porter from Texas talked to my dad for a long time. He invited me to come up and meet with coach (Stacy) Searels. I'm going to cal him tomorrow and he's going to tell me what the schedule is going to be. I'm going to go talk to Searels, meet with them in their office and see what's up."

"I guess talking to my dad, they really want me to come up and meet with coach Searels, kind of re-establish contact,"
    Blackmar said.

"Growing up, I was a huge UT fan. I've got the UT shirts, all that stuff because my dad went there," Blackmar said. "I thought they were the greatest thing on earth. Now that I'm getting into the recruiting process and I've got offers, I've been to other schools and seen things I like. If Texas offered, I wouldn't commit right away. I'd probably stick with my plan and kind of wait, go through spring ball and get into summer and make my decision sometime in the summer."

"Academics are going to be a big topic in my family. I've got three uncles who are all engineers. My dad is an engineer. I have three grandparents who are doctors, two of them went to Harvard. So academics are a big deal in my family,"
Blackmar said. "But I want to go somewhere we're going to win and compete, and there's a good overall feeling, good fan support."

"I also pay close attention to the weight program because that's someone you're going to spend a ton of time with. And I also pay really close attention to the potential to play early. I like to look at that a lot because I do want to play as much as possible."

Minor update on LB/S Edwin Freeman of Arlington Bowie, per 24/7...he's moved his decision date back a bit from late spring to summer. He's also revised his Top 3 to Texas, TCU and Texas A&M (in that order). Despite him listing Texas has his #1 for a few weeks now, most analysts believe TCU is the team to beat as they recently hired his former head coach. Sounds like UT is recruiting him the hardest right now.

A new JUCO name to remember is WR D'haquille Williams of Mississippi Gulf Coast CC. This guy has been talked about for a while but it was unclear if Texas had offered a scholarship, but it's definitely legit at this point. 24/7 has this guy rated at a 100 (out of a possible 100) and certain people think he's so good that he could go straight to the NFL Draft next year instead of signing with a major D1 program. He's originally from Reserve, LA.

Quotes from the coaches of JUCO WR D'haquille Williams (24/7):

“I believe he’s talked to every school in the country at some point,” Mississippi Gulf Coast assistant coach Pete Bennett said.

”I wouldn’t even know where to begin listing them all off. Texas, LSU, Auburn, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma State are some off the top of my head that have shown recent interest or ones that have offered.”

“Three he has mentioned to me that he likes a lot are Auburn, Southern California and the University of Texas,” Bennett told Hookem.com. “I know a lot of people think that because he’s from Louisiana that he’s a lock to go to LSU, but that’s not the case judging from what he told me. He said that he likes Auburn a lot since they really recruited him first, along with the other two, USC and UT. Those are probably the three he’s mentioned the most consistently to myself.”

“I want to say it was about three or four weeks ago when they (Texas) officially offered,” said Bennett. “I can’t remember when exactly it was, but it was that time frame. They’ve recruited him well recently and have sent a lot of letters. Probably just as much mail as any other program you can imagine. You can see they’ve made a big impression on him in such a short time, especially with him listing Texas in those three schools mentioned.”

“D’haquille wants to go to a place where he feels like play right away,” Bennett said. “He’s a two-for-two (two years to play two) guy, so he doesn’t have a lot to time to sit and figure things out. Honestly, athletically and talent wise, he's it. He’s the type of kid who could stay one year in college and leave for the draft the following year. So getting on the field for him is very important.”

“Basically he’ll look at teams and study their wide receiver depth chart closely,” Bennett said. “He’ll see how he fits in that offense and see where he can get on field as quick as possible in an offensive style he likes. He wants to go to a play where they throw the ball a lot, which is why those three schools he listed are right there for him. Auburn will be airing it out, I know Texas will be this year and USC always does as well. That’s why he likes them. They’re big time programs for a big time receiver.”
