Also check out Danny Ramos. Or Alex Perez or Rudy Lopez. Doesnt get any more ignorant than hating on your own culture.
Unless they're Native Americans, all of them are hating on their own culture. Doesn't get any more ignorant than attacking a kid.

De La Cruz, who was actually just a last-minute replacement for former Hootie & the Blowfish front man Darius Rucker

Many on the social media site aimed racist remarks at San Antonio’s tiny mariachi, implying he is an undo ented immigrant and therefore unfit to sing the “The Star-Spangled Banner.” That led to a strong reaction from others who were outraged by the criticism of De La Cruz.

On the positive side, Express-News NBA Beat Writer Mike Monroe said it was “boffo.”

I like his voice. Let him sing again in game 4
no that , carting out the same kid to sing the national anthem over and over is part of the bull the Heat organization does

This is the most attention that annoying little mariachi kid has gotten since he was that annoying little mariachi kid I used to dvr through while watching America's Got Talent.

Dude sang well, but I have an issue with it because I take the whole mariachi thing as being somewhat mocking of the culture we have here. It would be like if when we were playing the pistons in the finals NBC or whomever had Eminem come out in a tank top and sweat pants and rap the national anthem. It's like the network pushed the kid forward as a condescending stereotype.

The whole illegal thing is bull though. I can only imagine the backlash if Golden State had Clay Aiken sing the National Anthem.

Again, you coward, stop hiding behind this alter ego and tell me where you live. You are just a representation of things wrong with America, a country built by immigrants. Tons of ignorant people like yourself who can't think for a minute what they say - they just consume whatever bull is given to them by the media - now it seems everything that is wrong with America has something to do with illegal immigrants - great scapegoat... The main problem is having ignorant people like yourself, know-nothings, and the like. We have way too many of those - we don't need any more.

Are you going to make further stupid comments? or are you going to learn something here?

There is a ton of racism on ST but I'm starting to learn most of the guys on here are joking around (which I'm personally okay with) but a few are truely racist.

I can't stand Twitter and Social Media for this reason. People get very bold and act foolishly behind a computer screen or smartphone. However, this is America and people can speak freely. Hopefully, there will be more supporters of this young boy that come out in support of him to drown out all the negative comments.

I was born and raised in South Texas and I've lived here my entire life. I'm Hispanic and have always lived in predominantly Hispanic areas. I have really never seen Mariachi's have much of an influence in San Antonio as is depicted on national TV. I was never around them growing up and neither were my friends. My experience with Mariachi's is that they're nothing more than sideshows for special events. There's no demand for people to come to SA and see Mariachi's. Why is it then that every time there's a national TV event for SA that Mariachi's have to be thrown out there as a representation of SA? You also see them at the airport during the busy time of the travel season. Why? Mariachi's are actually a product of Mexico, not San Antonio. There's so much more that represents SA than Mariachi's. I'm actually quite embarrassed for SA when we're represented this way on national TV. I'm sorry but Mariachi's are not the best and true representation of our great city. It really makes us look like a 3rd rate city when the first thing a national TV audience sees about SA are Mariachis. SA is not the home nor is it the birthplace of Mariachi music...People don't come visit SA to see Mariachis.

For future national TV games, I would hope to see someone singing the national anthem that a national TV audience can identify with....someone like Pat Green, Jack Ingram, Los Lonely Boys, George Strait, Ray Wylie Hubbard, or Two Tons of Steel. Those are much more mainstream artists that have a national following and are from this area.

I also miss the old Baseline Bums when they would proudly wave that huge Texas flag at the games. That's the kind of spirit and independence that we need to show national audiences. It was beautiful when everyone....white, black, hispanic....would unite as Texans to stick it to those "foreigners" from LA and Chicago whenever they came to play the Spurs. It's sad that we don't see the Texas flag flown at the Spurs games anymore. I really wish we would bring that back. I used to love George Valle from the Bums waving the Texas flag and one of his partners waving the "Come and Take It!" flag to commemorate the Texas Revolution. That was an awesome and beautiful thing to watch and be a part of. It's too bad that if someone were to do that today at the Spurs games somebody would probably claim it to be inappropriate. Somebody needs to bring back the tradition of waving the Texas flag at Spurs games.

Reality is just that haters are going to hate. That kid has accomplished more in life already than most of people calling him a be@ner on twitter combined. It's a hatred borne of impotence.

Why are people embarrassed by mariachi bands in San Antonio? It's Mexican party music, and San Antonio is a touristy party town with a huge Mexican influence. There's an outdoor theater on the riverwalk that has mariachi bands playing all summer long, and there's usually at least one playing somewhere in the tourist areas or in the arena during the playoffs. This doesn't happen because there's a cadre of white people saying "Hurry, the cameras are comin' on, bring out the mary-achos!"

Come on guys. Twitter and Social Media is all about attention. People say things to be funny. Most of these racist comments were meant in jest. You shouldn't take them too seriously.

Everyone takes cracks at San Antonio, the Spurs, and yes, a large faction of our fan base who happen to be Mexican. Nothing to get all up and arms about.

Do you know that the Mariachi outfit is actually what the Spanish nobles and Bull Fighters wore for centuries. Its NOT A MEXICAN GETUP, its Spanish. And hate to break it to you, but half of America use to be Occupied by the Spanish. My family has been living in Texas for nearly 500 years and yes I am Spanish-American with alot German ancestry as well. And the reason Texans are so proud is because WE ARE NOT IMMIGRANTS TO THE US, we were invited after becoming a nation of its own.

Comparing a Mariachi getup to a rapper getup. Really, one derived from Nobility to one derived from the Hood. The kid wasn't wearing a Cholo getup.

    And one!

Born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley and you nailed it.

Texans used to be Texan whether they were named Seguin or Smith.

I was a little put off by the suit as well. It was a charicature on one level and in-your-face in another. There is a reason people don't risk everything they have, including their lives, to cross the border SOUTHbound.

We have forgotten how to just be Americans. We are terribly Balkanized. Sad.

Cowboys Wear Spurs, you have a point. It wasn't a cholo outfit. LOL

The best Mariachi band is the trio who did the Swiffer duster commercial, BABY COME BACK. Hilarious and well played. Also extremely popular on YouTube.
