How horrible for Tony and his ex wife.

This takes every bit of joy from his season and just kills it.
I will be rooting for his Colts this year, even though, it will be no comfort really.

Tony Dungy's son found dead in Tampa-area apartment
TAMPA - A former Buccaneers coach still beloved in the bay area is facing a personal tragedy, even as his new team prepares for a run at the Super Bowl.
Tony Dungy's 18-year-old son James was found dead in his USF-area apartment early this morning by Hillsborough County deputies. There were no signs of foul play, investigators said, but they would not confirm if the cause of death was suicide.
According to the sheriff's office, deputies were called to the Campus Lodge apartments off Livingston and found James not breathing at 1:30 a.m. He was taken to University Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Tony Dungy, 50, led the Buccaneers from 1996 to 2001 and is the coach most often given credit for the franchise's turnaround. He was fired in 2001 despite compiling a winning record and went on to coach the Indianapolis Colts, who just last week lost their first game of the season and are favored by many to win the Super Bowl.
Many fans were sad to see Tony leave because the popular coach was known for, among other things, his community activism and commitment to family and faith. Tony and his wife Lauren both volunteered with several bay area charities, and Tony even launched Mentors for Life, a program that provided tickets to Bucs games to kids and their mentors.
Aside from James, the Dungys have four other children. Most of the coach's volunteer work centered around family, and he was one of several NFL spokesmen for All-Pro Dad, an organization geared toward helping men be better fathers.
There was no immediate comment from the family or the team.
How horrible for Tony and his ex wife.

A terrible tragedy. I wish the Seahawks didn't have to play them Saturday.![]()
Damn, this is horrible. Prayers to their whole family.
Are they divorced?
I assumed, since since she is still in Tampa.
Oh. I don't think they are divorced, but it doesn't matter.
It would be a tragedy even if Tony Dungy were the worst man in the world. Obviously, he's a far, far better man than that, which causes us to all feel some vicarious pain arising from today's news. I've seen up close a parent forced to grieve the death of a child and can't imagine the pain that must be associated with that. Realizing that one of these larger-than-life personalities -- one that we've all come to know in some sense -- is dealing with such a perverse tragedy reminds us that those people are still just people and that what they do for a living (to entertain the rest of us) is far from the all-encompassing endeavor that we so often make it out to be. It truly puts the sports world into perspective, I think.
I lost my father years ago near Christmas time -- I have to say that every Christmas since then has been dampened by the memory of that loss and it's proximity to the holiday. A loss at Christmas doesn't make dealing with a death any harder, but it does cruelly juxtapose the joy of the season with the grief over the passing. I pray for Tony Dungy, his wife and their children. I'm certain that faith will carry them through.
They said it might have been a suicide because things lead to it being a suicide that they found but they will say what was the real cause of death tomorrow.
They said it still looks like to be an apparent suicide. He had overdosed on pills before.
When I heard about this last night, I was like???
Prayers to his family. That sucks.
Supposedly his girlfriend cheated on him, and that's what drove him over the edge![]()
I'm so sorry for Tony's family. Such a horrible time for this to happem. God Bless them.
it seems like a lot of athletes and coaches family members have passed away recently
I heard reports that she went for a walk at 1 in the morning for like 10 minutes and when she returned he was not breathing. Just seemed peculiar.
Its so heartbreaking to hear of news like that. I can't imagine the pain they must be feeling. I pray for him and his family to get through this. I heard Herm Edwards talking about how a tragedy like this puts things in perspective. Its not about the game or winning but being there for your family and loved ones.
They're in my prayers![]()

Report: Dungy's son overdosed previously
December 24, 2005
LUTZ, Fla. -- A medical examiner's preliminary report Friday confirmed that the 18-year-old son of Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy took his own life, although the cause of death will not be determined for four to six weeks.
Dr. Jacqueline Lee released the findings and said there was no evidence of foul play. Lee ordered a toxicology study, and until it is finished the cause and manner of James Dungy's death are listed as pending.
His girlfriend found him unresponsive early Thursday, Hillsborough County Sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said. Carter said evidence at the scene indicated he had killed himself.
A sheriff's deputy performed CPR before an ambulance took him to University Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Indianapolis Star, citing police records, reported Friday that a Florida hospital had treated James Dungy for a drug overdose two months ago.
On Oct. 21, Dungy said he was depressed when he took about 14 prescription painkillers, according to a Hillsborough County sheriff's report cited by the newspaper.
James Dungy was taken to an area hospital and no other information about the incident was immediately available, the newspaper reported.
I was telling my step-dad that earlier. They said on ESPN that he had overdosed and called 911 saying that he overdosed on pills and needed to go to the hospital.
