Alright, finally went and saw this movie this afternoon and here are my thoughts on it.
~~~There may be spoilers here preceed with that in mind~~~
The movie was entertaining and definitely had its moment of glory but I felt that it was totally devoid of the thing it was mostly seeking which was emotion.
It tried too hard. Outside of Cavill everyone looked bored. Pretty weak acting for supposed vets.
Also, I dont understand when people were saying the movie felt rushed. It wasnt.
The movie just had odd, ramdomly placed scenes. The flashbacks inly made this worse, it disrupted the flow of the story in the present time.
This film missed the mark on quite a few spots, mainly these ones..
-Several characters miscast
-The lack of certain Superman artifacts, namely Kryptonite
-Abandonment of the Superman mythos
Story wise this movie fails. Little made sense. Why was Louis asked to come aboard the ship along with Superman? It didn't make a lick of sense for her to be in there. Really Jor-el, you're going to teach her so she can teach the Man of Steel in return? That was laughable.
She played too large a role. It far exceeded her actual use.
They also misused the character Zod. Superman actually spent more time fighting that machine thing than he did Zod. That last showdown was so weak and pathetic. Ugh
Overall this movie is a 7.5 all for the action. I was fairly happy with that.
Superman Returns kicks this movie's ass if we're just talking about the actual story. I get why people think that one is bad. Yeah it lacks action but its rich in story and what's more its accurate to Superman mythology. Give me that over gimmicky over the top CGI action any day.
The critics were right. This movie caters to the ones who dont give two s about the Superman as we know him and just want some silly action flick.
My two cents.
SA210 seeings rather....butthurt.
Dont talk bad about my baby even though I know its re ed.
No, it's just thatReturns tbh
So you actually think Man of Steel storyline beats that of Returns? Forget all about the action.
They could have named the movie something else and you wouldn't recognize it was an actual Superman movie.
Aside from the costume, some well known characters, can you tell me something this movie did that had us like, ohhh yes I remember this or oh yeah I know what that is and so on.
Returns at least had all that. A superman movie without kryptonite might as well be named "Random Summer hit movie come see it."
Well, I was one of the first to say I wasn't feeling the early choppy feel, but after watching it whole, I don't mind it. I think they just didn't want it to be the same as the other origin films. Been there done that, and I accept that, and I like it afterall.
A little fast, but I think they won't rush it too much in the sequel. As far as casting goes, I think it was just about perfect. Returns is the one I hated the casting. I hated all their choices basically other than Routh. I knew this one would be different than anything we have seen. Btw, on the krytonite, it's been rumored that it will be used later. Again, they didn't want the same ol story to start off the new franchise.
You're wrong. Why would a Superman origin story have krptonite in it? How would anyone know what his weakness would be? No reason for kryptonite in this movie. Hasn't been discovered yet as a weakness.
I thought the story for this was better than Returns. The story in that movie was weak sauce overall. Luthor was made weak in that story. The overall plot was dumb. Superman leaving for 5 years was even dumber especially after promising after Superman 2 he would never disappear again and Returns was a direct sequel for Superman 2. Also, Superman having a child with Lois Lane was random and never written about before.
I expected a rehashed story, but was ok with having something new and fresh. I've read a ton of Superman comics, watched a ton of animated shows and movies as well as live action movies so I've pretty much seen it all when it comes to origins. This story was different in a sense but still had alot of the same themes overall. Only thing really new was how he defeated Zod in the end.
How am I wrong?
I said Returns has pretty much all the elements one would expect from a Superman movie. This movie does not.
This movie is totally different. Even the characters are all wrong.
And lol Superman kills now.
The story was bad.
Superbas screaming at people is awesome.
Returns didn't have all the elements. When does Superman ever have a child? Lex Luthor's version was an outdated version as well. It was an outdated story from an older time and no one really cares how Superman was portrayed in older movies when the comics have better and fresher stories. The story and characters in Returns were weak sauce and apparently DC and Warner Bros agreed which is why they blew it up.
How were the characters all wrong in this movie? You're just too fixated on kryptonite.
How else was Superman gonna stop Zod at the end? Vulcan death grip?
The story wasn't bad at all. I was alot more entertained with the pace and story compared to Returns which was very boring in my opinion. Returns got most of the characters wrong when it counted.
I didn't say all, but most.
The characters were miscast. Perry White ain't black. Amy Adams was possibly the worst actress for this job and Pete Ross got relagated to being a nerd and so miniscule I wonder why they even had him in.
How else was Superman going to stop Zod? How about how's he's always done.
And of course the Story suffered in this movie because they focused far too much on the action rather than take their time with the developement of the story.
I'm not even hating on this movie. I liked it but not because it was so awesomely constructed but rather because of the high pump action. About what you can expect from a summer flick.
Eh... it was alright. I was getting action fatigued by the end, just as I was during the Hobbit.
Wow...
Some of the remarks I'm seeing here. In my opinion, this start of a new Superman franchise could be the best ever. I agree the action was a bit over done, but not a single character was made to be foolish. Things like kryptonite I don't expect will happen, as the space ship went FTL and a planetary explosion will not.
I love the way they reimaged Superman, just like I love the way the reimaged Star Trek, and Battlestar Galactica.
**Spolier**
Umm, Superman kills Zod in the comics..
So?
Redoing the same concept over and over is so... boring...
I like change.
So?
No.
The story was awesome.
And that materrs... why?
In Battlestar Galactica, Starbucjk was a guy i the original, and a royal in the reimaged. Boomer was black in the original, but an asian woman, and Cylon at that, in the reimaged. Cain was a male in the original, and woman in the reimaged.
What's your problem with a different concept... that lacks predictability?
I suspect they have plans to have a second, third, etc. to complete storyline arcs.
Good.
I just hope you appreciate that change can be good. If they have a next one, you will not know what to expect, and it will, make the anticipation better...
I felt like I was watching Han during some parts. Every time Superman took off flying, he left a big crater in the sidewalk. There's no excuse for that.
I'm interested to see what they do with Lex Luthor.
Hopefully they make Luthor as bad ass as he should be unlike in Returns whch was a joke. With the Lexcorp signs, he won't be anything like the character in Returns. With Lexcorp, he will be a badass in a business suit, using all kinds of technology. I don't think he will be the main villain either. Probably more of a behind the scenes villain instead.
To be fair to Returns, they were using the same characterization as the original. And unfortunately they had him trying to pull the same thing - some over complicated real estate scheme. Like Joker in TDK, I expect them to make him believable and scary this time around.
he just learned to fly and hasnt mastered it yet. this is why he tells lois to step back. he wasnt kidding.
Exactly, and this is what I really love about the sequel, so much more to come in his strength and experience. I loved that they did it like this.
Superman just got starked.
I did love the movie
Saw it today, and like every other Christopher Nolan story, it needs a ing re-write.
We were robbed of a "big reveal". You know, when Superman reveals himself to the world to save the day? The best we got was a quick clip of him saving the oil drillers before he even knew who he was.
The rest of the film played out like an "independence day" meets "transformers" meets "superhero film" meets "bad romantic comedy". The script was just boring and over-complicated and full of plot holes (like ALL Nolan films).
I thought Cavil was better than Routh. But the point of having him grow up in Kansas is that it makes him "human". He may have been born on Krypton but living on earth made him "one of us". This superman was the total "fish out water" the entire film. Russell Crowe was easily the best of the bunch. Amy Adams was just okay i guess. Costner was fine but they took 5 or 6 scenes to convey the exact same message (you are here for a reason..you cant use your powers for selfish reasons etc) that the original film did in one.
I give it a C. At least this film didnt have villains who only failed because they were incredibly stupid like in "The Dark Knight Rises".
Thanks Nolan. You ruined both Batman AND Superman.
