What Spurfan doesn't understand, some of us at least, is that the Spurs try to draft players EARLY. They try and get guys that would be picked in the teens or higher after a couple more years of development. This is the reason that analysts are always crediting the Spurs with draft-day "steals" when the player makes it over and begins to actually contribute. One reason the Spurs have been so successful is the ability to have patience.

    Chad Ford likes the pick...

Livio Jean-Charles was the breakout star at the Nike Hoop Summit. Jean-Charles exploded with 27 points, 13 rebounds, two steals and two blocks. He clearly was the MVP of the World Team, doing the little things that impresses scouts all week. He's long, athletic, has a nose for the ball and can score both inside and on the midrange jumper. Spurs think he'll spend another year in France before he comes to the NBA. A nice pick here.
Agree. Jean-Charles and Wiggins lead the World Team in Nike Hoop Summit. I really like the guy.

With all these SF prospects Spurs have interest in, What are the odds Kawhi becomes our SG once the big 3 retire? Does anyone think he can actually improve his handles/shooting to the point where this is possible? Thoughts?

Buford said Spurs had Livio Jean-Charles rated as one of the top 20 players in the draft.

Considering how hard he works, yes. I suspect he'll be working on all of that over the summer.

Is he a SF or a PF? I just hope he is not another tweener, too slow to play the 3 and too weak/small to play the 4.
That's exactly what he is right now. Not skilled enough to play the 3 and way too weak to play the 4. He needs to really improve his perimeter game cause he's a 3 in the NBA. Dribbling and shooting need to improve drastically.

Who says he's an NBA 3? 19 year olds still have plenty of muscle mass to add, so he has a great chance to be an athletic 4.

He left his country (french Guyana) at the age of 14 years (and his family) to play basketball at INSEP where Tony, Boris, Evan Fournier ... learned the game

He plays SF/PF, good handling, rebounds, defense, high IQ basketball
He needs to improve his mid range shoot
For 2 years he is pro at villleurbanne (Lyon) the club chairs Tony Parker
It's a strong team in the French league so he plays a few minutes but gives everything, eager to learn, big work ethic, calm and balanced when he makes a mistake, it's never the same twice

I learned that the scout has spent 3 days "Lyon" to see it and test it (so they really believe in him)

He's a player who I think can have fast and consistent growth as Nicolas Batum
Tony the owner can influence this growth with more minutes, more responsibility in a good way

He did great Nike Hoop Summit, great Eurocamp
But he didn't made any workout for any other NBA team
    He was exclusively to Spurs

Looks like a good prospect for a team built around Parker.

Save a little more cap room for this offseason. No problem.
not sure how long you can build around a 31 year old point guard

I believe he scored 20 points but haven't found a good box score for one of the last 2 games

Looks like 20 pts 7 boards against Serbia

If you click on the tab called "MACLAR" that is at the top right, you can access to boxscores of previous games.
For the full stats, click on the "ISTATIK" tab.

Those games don't mean anything. McGrady can drop 30 easily in that game.

After watching the Nike Hoops game a couple of times I really like this pick. Jean-Charles shows:

    1. Great anticipation around the basket on offense, reading the ball, getting position for the rebound or put back.
    2. Very quick jumper
    3. A very nice touch around the basket, put backs and nice quick low post moves. Not stiff in his shooting like say Splitter or Mahinmi.
    4. Quick on defense, was staying in front of players, even in practice stayed in front of Wiggins who was trying to beat him in the half-court and took out the German PG Schroeder, blocking a fast break attempt, giving a stronger Randle a difficult time.
    5. Very good low post defender, on and off the ball, contested shots well.
    6. Good decisicion maker, made a few nice passes including a back door cut to the Russian Karasev.
    7. Ball handling in full-court was fine for a guy his size.

He was the best big on the international squad. Small sample size but his agility is not in question.Given his state of development I think the Spurs may have another gem. Just get him some time with Chip.

Had Gobert been available at 28, I wonder if the Spurs would've gone for him. Still sad SAS missed out on him.

Gobert was already the 28th draft pick but
    Gobert is bust
He's not strong enough at the leg
He's good just to receive the alley oop pass and do some Blocks, that's all
He's slow, has a shoot as good as Dwight Howard (ie none)
And he shoved around by smaller players, he doesn't know how to post

He's bad at pass, bad defense (just good at block because 7'2"),bad shoot
    BAD
    BAD
    BAD
