You have to read between the lines, keep your ear to the railroad track, and be plagued with a jaundiced eye.
Duncan will be applauded by the fans that actually realize he's retiring. But not in the playoffs. His team will be putting the west through its paces one more time and everyone will joyfully revert back to booing when they get that familiar bad taste in their mouths.
On nights Kobe plays well he will be hailed as a god by the fans present as well as the media. On nights he plays poorly people will throw it in his face.
Duncan will get more credit for his career as it ends, but Kobe will retain his status as most polarizing figure in sport.

If I'm not mistaken Lebron and MJ are the only guys to win b2b mvp's and finals mvp's. it's not out of the realm of possibility to have him leapfrog a guy that won 60% of his les as a 2nd banana

I've read somewhere that Kobe will announce his retirement once the season he chooses to retire is over, not before it starts. So Kobe won't have a farewell tour.
