That's a great question and too soon to tell. But I do like some of his picks. To name a few; 3rd rounder Dwayne Gratz is a big physical corner that fits right in play with Gus Bradley's type of secondary. Luke Joeckel even as bad as he looked yesterday I think that was just a rookie getting his ass whipped by a young athletic DE in his first NFL game. Usually big time tackles pan to be at least decent starters. Joeckel was a no brainer. Denard Robinson / Ace Sanders. Both of these guys have the game changing speed and unique skill sets that set a team apart. Ace Sanders is already starting due to Blackmon being suspended. Ace will shine once Blackmon and Cecil Shorts III are back on the field together. The other will have to wait and see.
The thing that has impressed me so far with David Caldwell has been more to do with his approach to gutting and rebuilding this team that lacks talent in all facets. He made all the right cuts. Got rid of the dead wait and replaced them with young athletic players that have started for other teams and signed them to 1-2 year conracts. These are players that have mid level talent that are looking to make a home and grab that second contract. In other words these are players that are hungry to make a name and be compe ive. For example Roy Miller DT from Tampa and Geno Hayes LB from Chicago and Will Blackmon CB from Seattle etc.
The one thing that bothers me about him so far is the fact that he didn't really address the QB position. But as a fan that hasn't been able to feel good about the QB position in years it may just be that I'm beyond impatient. He brought in Matt Scott UFA from Arizona. He has some mobility and a strong NFL arm. But he's so young and raw but he made the practice squad. Other than that he pretty much stayed pat at the QB position. I was hoping we would have made a play for Alex Smith as a game manager. But then again that's my impatience talking. Hopefully the plan is to draft a franchise QB with the first pick and then draft another development QB in the later rounds. One things for sure, Gabbert will not be the QB next year.
