The answer is, I believe, this.
Kobe played his best ball from 2001 to 2004 (excluding the Finals). During this time, he was clearly the 2nd banana, and players like Shaq, Duncan and Garnett were clearly better than Kobe. From 2005 to 2007, his team sucked so bad that not even volume chucking could get him much respect.
2008, he finally got his despite Paul and James both having better win shares (they were too young), and Lebron averaging more points, rebounds, assists, steals and blks, not to mention better FG% (as always).
In 2009 onwards, people realized it was actually Pau Gasol who made the Lakers special.
I think there are quite a few factors that contributed:
- Crappy team during his athletic prime
- Broken system of NBA MVP award (see Nash, Steve as the obvious system fail)
- Reputation hit from Colorado
- Kobe's been more sustained excellence than peak year performance. He spent well over a decade as a clear top-3 player but only occasionally had seasons which should have put him as a clear cut #1 MVP.
What's more telling to me as far as all-time greats go is Championships coupled with Finals MVPs. While Kobe is a 5 time champ, because he only garnered 2 FMVPs he'll never scratch the all-time top 5 outside of LaLa land and that seems fair. His sustained excellence will put him above some relative flash-in-the-pan greats like Shaq and Hakeem, but the lack of MVPs and FMVPs certainly is a relevant point.
Shaq has dominated the league for more than a decade. He also has 1. Nash had a short run later in his career, and he has 2.

also, Nash deserved his MVPs moreso than Kobe. IIRC, the team's offensive efficiency under Nash was off the charts (i'm sure defense was bad but not like Kobe excels in this either). The year Amare went down, I can't imagine Kobe leading that team to the WCF.
That year without Stoudemire was incredible.
It's relatively short in comparison to players who have won multiple MVP's.

Duncan is inarguably a great basketball player, but he’s not the best player of his generation. He’s not Kobe.
For someone that was 6 yrs old when MJ retired, how the did he "see" Lakers win the first 3 chips? Yeah right, a 8-10 year old would watch NBA on a consistent basis and realize what the fk was going on.
Typical Kirby stans, 16-23 years old, didn't really see him play until the 07-08 season, when Gasol arrived. His scoring ability is top 5 all-time, but he isn't a passer like Lebron, or a defender like MJ, he's not a bad player, he's a top 20 great, but not a GOAT candidate.
