Raiders suck and forever will suck
the offseason. this is where we make stupid signings, sign stupid players, and give ourselves false hope that next year will see improvements. the raiders have been notorious for being in a salary cap hole for the past decade, and wasting whatever space we did have on ty rookies like JaWalrus, McFadden, DHB, Rolando McClain, etc. We sign re ed free agents like Javon Walker and DeAngelo Hall with whatever room we managed to clear.
For the first time I can remember, the Raiders have a great cap situation. In fact, we have the most spending money in the NFL, and since the salary cap is increasing as always, the Raiders have more money to spend than any team in NFL history (projected to be a number around 70 million). Granted, they will have to resign some key players who won't be cheap, like LT Jared Veldheer, DE Lamarr Houston, and a few other defensive guys, but they will still have a ton of money left. Will they throw money at a top tier free agent? I doubt it, McKenzie is known to be a pretty conservative GM, who would rather sign a handful of good player instead of making one splashy signing. The most expensive free agent he has brought in during his short tenure was Mike Brisiel, for 5 million per year.
For once, we have a first AND second round pick (woo!). For once, we have a lot of cap room and have rid ourselves of ty albatross contracts. This coming offseason will shape the next 5 years of Raiders football. Will they make smart decisions with the available cap room? Will they put their early picks to use? The qb situation is going to be addressed, I just hope they don't think this draft has a great crop, so I'd prefer they pick up a stopgap like Cutler while biding time for a better qb class. I have a feeling McKenzie will want to pick up BJ Raji, but dude is already on the decline and will get lazy if he gets paid. I wanted them to draft him over DHB back then, but I dont think it would be a great signing now, especially since he reportedly turned down 8 mil per year.
