Honestly tho, as a Laker fan, the best thing to happen to the Lakers this season (aside from Phil being HC) is Lakers getting the dog kicked out of them. It makes the message harder to avoid by the FO that its time to change

I'll be surprised if you don't go through a couple more coaches before Jim realizes he has to go though...

Honestly, as Kobe stood there and had one of the worst games of his career but hoisted that finals MVP. I thought it was CLEAR as day it would be his last championship, and the Lakers last ring for a LONG time. I assumed 5-8 years (long for lakers). One way or the other, I see Kobe leaving early this season because the team is not really worthy, Pau is gonna sit out as well.

I see Kobe leaving to play for another team and give it 1 or 2 more seasons and try to win a chip (ie Peyton Manning in Denver). I also think Lakers will go till 2018 before they have a realistic chance at contending again. It's not too bad tho, it was expected after 7 out of 10 finals appearances from 2000-2010

Not gonna worry about the future, when the present is enjoyable. But you do have a point though. It's not much different to what the Lakers are going through right now, after Fisher/Phil Jackson aged and walked away.

    subtle
Agree with all that, but before Dr Buss passed, it seemed the storm was only going to be around until Kirby decided to call it quits, because his salary, while it made the team money, was simply a choke-hold against acquiring solid talent.

But now the ascension of Jim puts the expiration date on mediocrity on stand by. You have to add that while going deep in the luxury tax was no problem when Dr Buss was around, now it's extremely prohibitive.

Obviously, there will be more CBA negotiations in the future, but these times are not like Dr Buss times.
elephant in the room and best overall point. the laker fans on here thinking Lakers should get whatever they want because they can outspend everyone better pray there won't be a hard cap, because things are inching further in that direction. that would actually benefit teams like Spurs who have no problem working within a budget. if the CBA becomes more prohibtive, I could see a mass exodus of Laker bandwagoners tbh. This board wouldn't be the same.

as for bynumite about Spurs post Duncan, we won't be winning 4 championships in several years like with the greatest PF of all time, but we were competing in playoffs pre Duncan so most likely we will continue to compete.

I have a hard time believing the lakers would let Kobe go easily. The guy puts butts at seats. Plus he has admitted on wanting to be a laker for life.

the Lakers can potentially make the 8th seed, though I wouldn't put money on it. You pretty much have to expect the following 7 to be locks for the playoffs: Spurs, Thunder, Clippers, Rockets, Grizzlies, Warriors, Mavs. that leaves one spot, where the Lakers will have a shot. If the Lakers go back to being a Pau-centric offense, they will have a good shot of taking that 8th spot. I'd like to think New Orleans takes that last spot provided cornerstone can play > half the season

I have a hard time believing Kobe is gonna wanna return to this mess after he sees whats up this season. Lakers are a mess inside out, its not his fault. I just cant see a contender team that would greatly benefit from having Kobe though.

What should happen - Lakers played hard to fight for the playoffs, barely missed it. Lands 13th pick.
What Lakers should do - Tank the out of the season to get a top 3 pick.
What Laker execs want to happen - Lakers played hard to fight for the playoffs, barely missed it. Lands 2nd pick.
What would happen - Lakers played hard to fight for the playoffs, gets a +12FTA advantage, makes 7th seed. Lands 2nd pick by trading away Jim Buss, D'antoni and spare car parts.

BTW, also agree Spurs will be irrelevant once Popovich is gone. He may not be the best X&O coach in the history of the league, but he is most definitely one of the best leaders in building a culture of winning, getting right fit, and preparing the team in the best way possible.

I think he's the best in game coach better than Phil IMHO.

There's a good chance D'Antoni is fired before All Star break which should make this year as Nash' last season with the Lakers.

I don't really see KFC as a great X&O coach, and for reasons I can't even explain, I always gave that benefit to Ted Winters. But other great X&O coaches are Chuck Daly, Pat Riley, Larry Brown, Hubie Brown, Scott Brooks ....
