there is never "they are due". There are teams that understand that winning takes commitmment and cohesiveness from the federation + coaching + playing style + players ..and they do it for many years and get results (dutch, germans, italians, brazilian 10 years ago, and in the last 10 years spaniards) and there are "star teams".

Like england. Like the last 3 brasilian sides. Like argentina 2010 and I'm sorry to say it right now. Amazing talent in all those sides. But they don't play like a team, they play like 11 players out there on the pitch. This starts from under 15/16/18/21 sides playing different styles because they are not integrated in the same system at federation level.

It continues with crazy coaching decisions like:
    - eriksson then capello then hodgson wtf team iden y does this build? at least pick similar styles ffs, of course they'll play the most basic if the team never has an iden y. Long ball to the rescue
    - or maradona ... in good god's name the man is not a coach. The argentine federation simply shat on their talent with such a moronic choice. The argentine federation is wasting one of the GOAT footballers with such bull
    - brasil coaching in the last 10 years has been patchy at best. Lots of 180 degree changes and a NT that hasn't shown much.

And it ends up on the field where the team always lacks an iden y and you see the same mistakes year in year out. The same 1v1s when a pass was in order. The same "stars" mentality. The same uninspired play against a good team and the same blind hope that "next time will be better".

And it continues because these teams will beat lesser sides in qualifications and groups by individual quality (rooney, messi, neymar, etc). Then everybody will say: look, we were so close. Or like you say:"we are due next time". Only next time it's the same all over again, because the real reasons remain unchanged. These teams never control the game, they can never put a boot in the other team's face and take the game by the balls.

Look at spain and germany and what they did with their NT in the last 10 years. Then look another 5 years eariler to see federation level decisions that led to a common playing style and a team iden y. You can take a german kid from u16 and he'll be familiar with the NT playstyle. Also the federations understood that you have to think longterm to get somewhere. That's the difference between contender and pretender. A long term game plan. And the results back this up nicely.
    You type too much tbh

If you let Uruguay play counter, you're toast... that's basically the only thing they're good at on attack...

It's the lack of defense in the midfield that en bers England time and time again on each tournament imho. It's not like their players were all trained to play long ball, quite the contrary you've seen many skillful young players having developed into stars on the British island, but who was the best defensive midfielder they've got since Nicky Butt and Owen Hargreaves? The same problem had also been troubling spanish football until Marcos Senna became an anchor in their midfield (followed by Alonso & Busquets) who helped them win the Euro Cup in 08. Of course they had better overall midfielders (like Cesc) but still they used Senna to accompany Xavi in the midfield for his defense.

Well, you can defend yourself by not rushing the attack into the first glimpse of space and thus avoid losing the ball. I believe one of the main problems of English football is considering the central defenders as guys who just should be strong, tackle well and win in the air. That's just a standard part of a modern centre back. The position nowadays requires much more: good ball control, short and mid-range passing, pace to play high up the pitch and press to win the ball back. And once you win it, not hoofing it into the stands, but passing it to a teammate. You must constantly move with the midfield to offer back passes and also approach the goalie to play the ball and keep possesion. A long pass* should be used only if there isn't a better option and the intended receiver will move into space.

    * Long pass≠long ball to a tall striker. Long passes are played into spaces where the attacking player will have a good chance of controlling it and taking on the defender 1 on 1. I'm talking about Pirlo, Verón, Riquelme, etc.

If Italy win out (which they really should) England could be the worst team to qualify from the group stage ever.

since 1996 we had a rough run until 2004. in 2002 we were lucky and got to the wc finals by heart alone. That would've been considered a massive success by others but in general football in germany was suffering and footballing minds knew it. So in 1998 after that horrid wc there were some changes at federation level. 2000 brought some other changes too because we sucked donkey . So the building blocks were set then.

    Results:
euro 2004 our old generation was done, was expected.
wc 2006 we got to the semifinals, lost to champ(italy) in a close match. 3rd place.
euro 2008 we got to the finals, lost to champ(spain). 2nd place
wc 2010 we got to the semifinals, lost to champ(spain) in a tough match. 3rd place
euro 2012 we got to the semifinals, lost to italy, 4th place.
wc 2014 as of today: first place in group while spain and england are already going home.

We didn't win any silverware but these are excellent, consistent results.
