Which I thought. No one is going to play for peanuts for the Heat, especially after the Spurs showed teams the formula to beat the Heat this year.
If Bosh signs with Houston before any of the other maneuvering is done, wouldn't that put Miami under the cap even with the cap holds for Wade/Lebron ($68 less $20 for Bosh = $48). I guess they could stay above it by not renouncing any of their other free agents.
But how would a Melo signing work? They'd either have to be under the cap to sign him (no MLE = how do they make the McRoberts deal work). Or a pair of sign and trades with Houston and New York?
Which I thought. No one is going to play for peanuts for the Heat, especially after the Spurs showed teams the formula to beat the Heat this year.
I think it would pave the way for James to re-sign, Melo to come aboard at a lesser max, and get Gasol at a bargain. It has been reported that Miami is low balling Bosh.
I don't know specific figures, but I do know that Riley is a very shrewd man.
That's exactly what I said Riley should do earlier in this thread.
The main problem with this scenario is them offering contracts to McRoberts and Granger.
Edit : Can someone tell me if what I proposed would work salary cap wise? If they sign Wade to about 10M per season, and then James and Anthony close to max deals, can they still offer Gasol a bit more than the MLE? Come to think of it, I don't think it's possible under the salary cap to offer Gasol more than the MLE. I don't think they'd even have the MLE in that situation, would they?

LEBRON TO ANNOUNCE DECISION AT UNITED NATIONS
N.B.A. superstar LeBron James said Tuesday morning that he would announce the name of the team that he is signing with on Thursday at a special session of the United Nations General Assembly to be convened especially for that purpose.
“This decision affects everyone on the planet,” James said. “I want to let all the nations on Earth know at the same time.”
An emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council on Tuesday was deadlocked on the issue, with seven members wanting James to remain in Miami, seven others hoping for a return to Cleveland, and Lithuania abstaining.
The Miami Heat president, Pat Riley, and the Cleveland Cavaliers owner, Dan Gilbert, both confirmed that they would be in the audience at the United Nations to hear James announce his decision. “I’m not going to lie: I wish he’d tell me in advance,” Riley said. “But I guess I’ll have to wait to hear along with Russia, China, Ecuador, and everybody else. That’s the way LeBron wants it.”
To help him with his decision, the N.B.A. star has assembled an esteemed circle of advisers, including Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and the scientist Stephen Hawking, all of whom are expected to be in attendance for the United Nations announcement.
The U.N. General Secretary, Ban Ki-moon, acknowledged on Tuesday that the world body had many other issues on its plate, including conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, but added, “It’s really hard to focus on anything until we know where LeBron is going.”

Excellent post.
Here is a really good article that breaks down the scenario nicely.

Good find.
Of course it goes without saying that this all becomes moot if James signs somewhere else like Cleveland, and/or Melo finally signs somewhere other than Miami.
I really hope the Spurs start considering Ed Davis as opposed to Gasol. I just have a feeling he's gonna sign with the Bulls after LeBron makes his decision. It seems all of these teams are focused on Gasol. Why not go backdoor and try to sign Ed Davis for the MLE.
I like the idea of Ed Davis and he's obviously got potential but I wouldn't get your hopes up. Spurs typically don't like historically lazy players who don't always give effort.
In other words, the Heat are f'd if Bosh leaves because they've committed to Granger and McRoberts and may not have those exceptions (and if they get Melo they CERTAINLY would not have those exceptions).
On an unrelated note, looking at all of these FA deals, would it be insane for the Spurs to shop a guy like Green (getting paid half of what Avery Bradley is making)? He's certainly going to command at least $6-$7mm next year given where these contracts are falling out and why not hit the reset button on his roster spot similar to the Hill-Kawhi+Bertrans swap which not only was a win from a basketball standpoint but also from a financial one.
Not saying to shake up something that worked well - we all agree that Green was one of the most important players in last year's run with his stellar defense and some good shooting. Also is not something that a championship team does with a key cog unless his replacement is apparent. But is there a 1-2% chance of it happening? Sure.
Gasol wants to get payedddddd i said.
I think they will work something out with Green due to his defense.
That's perfectly fine as long as he don't go OKC or Miami (with James)
If they trade Green they will immediately be looking for someone like Green.
Thinking about the future is fine, but it doesn't make sense to shop him right now, since you won't get anything near equal value in return, considering his current salary..the Leonard-Hill swap has worked out tremendously, but there was a huge luck factor that has benefited the Spurs in that trade..
Green's contract is extremely cheap right now when you look at what others have received in the off-season, so far(Meeks 6 per year, Gordon 4.5 per year, Bazemore rumors of 5-6 per year, Miles 5 per year), like you said..
Seriously, trading a player who makes below the league average and shot 48% from the arc for the last 44 playoff games is usually insane.
And most probably better and younger.
And they would be even less likely to find that player.
I totally agree.
I should have added less expensive too.
Agreed - I'm just thinking if the team isn't going to pony up for Green next offseason (hopefully everyone blows their load this offseason) they could think about it, but would have to be blown away with a deal. Just worried that on the open market, someone offers him close to eight figures.
If they win a le next year though, I couldn't care less.
So Spurs are behind three other teams and one of the top two is a long shot. So the bulls is most likely?
I think the NBA would be better if there was less FA movement tbh.
they should get rid of the MLE, and make it so that every player's salary counts 5% less against the cap/tax for every year he has stayed on the same team...
