He's a recruit. We're almost certainly not getting a commitment from him now... outside shot of it happening later though.

Malik Jefferson discusses Saturday's visit. (InsideTexas)

The Mesquite Poteet linebacker just left campus minutes ago and dropped me a line. If you're looking for some monumental update on Jefferson, now's not the time. He's in no hurry to decide, or even trim his list, rather, he'd prefer to continue doing his diligence and stick to his December timeline.

This allows the early enrollee to do as much homework on each school as possible while waiting for the all important data point to crystallize. That's of course the 2014 season.
As with many prospects, this is somewhat of a family decision. Accordingly, Jefferson traveled to Austin with his mother and two brothers. Pops would have loved to have made the trip but work beckons.

Here's what Jefferson had to say.

Inside Texas: No small talk needed. How'd it go?

Malik Jefferson: It went well. It was really laid back.

IT: What did the visit entail?

MJ: We spent a lot of time talking, really. Not only with Coach Strong and Coach BJ (Brian Jean-Marie), but also the rest of the coaches, even the Offensive Coordinator. We were there for four hours and spent it all in the offices.

IT: You said it was laid back. Did you see a softer side of Strong? Perhaps even humorous?

MJ: Oh yeah, we were laughing the whole time.

IT: Football wise, what did you discuss?

MJ: We watched some film from when he was at Louisville, but not a whole lot. He wasn't really selling me too hard. He was actually pretty smooth about how bad he wanted me there - he wasn't over the top or laying it on too thick but I picked up on it.

    IT: Did academics come up?

MJ: Some but not about actual school so much as life after football. We talked about that for a while, the importance of education, but it wasn't so much about what I would study in college.

IT: I'm sure he brought up the recent dismissals. What are your thoughts about that?

MJ: Yes, we discussed that. I mean, he said players were breaking their core values and that won't last. From my standpoint, I respect it; you have to. Following the rules is just something you've got to do.

    IT: What was the highlight?

MJ: Ummm, it was just cool and relaxing. Like I said, we joked around a lot.

    IT: And the lowlights?

    MJ: Lowlights??? [laughing]

IT: Scale of 1-10, how was it?

    MJ: 9/10.

It would certainly compete with your " Tim Duncan" motto.

Some quotes from DT Daylon Mack regarding Malik Jefferson and his influence on Macks decision, from Horns Digest.

"I would definitely start to look at them (if Jefferson went there)."

"I plan to only take two official visits and one will be to Texas A&M." Mack said. "I'm not sure where the other will be but UT is under high consideration. They are coming after me extremely hard. I feel like I am one of their top priorities."

"I like the way he (Charlie Strong) is running the program," Mack said. "He is trying to fix it to his liking. He didn't get the job because things were going all fine and dandy."

Haha, that last part is a great quote by Mack. It reads like something Strong probably told him though.

According to 24/7, Burt had made up his mind two or three weeks ago. He was down to Texas and Auburn, with FSU a distant third. Apparently he didn't want to stay close to home. So much for Barton Simmons source claiming distance was the killer for Texas...

Quotes from WR John Burt of Tallahassee, FL after committing to Texas (OrangeBloods):

"I just felt like Texas was the best school," Burt said. "It was a little bit of everything, the comfort, it's like a home away from home. I can be independent, but I also have that family feel with coach Vaughn being from Tallahassee and I have family that lives there also."

"The little things about Texas stood out more than any school," Burt said. "I knew about my decision two weeks ago."

"The facilities are really nice. The coaches, there's something about the coaches that kind of draws me towards them," Burt said, detailing what put Texas out in front. "Coach Vaughn, he's a really cool guy and I talk to him a lot."

"When (Strong) is not in the zone coaching, he's a really cool, laid back guy. He was excited, but he wasn't jumping all over the room or anything," Burt said. "That's not the kind of guy his is, but you could tell he was pretty excited."

"Early on, my first two years, I can bring size and speed. I can bring some underclassmen leadership and once I build my way up, I bring overall team leadership to go with the with on-field stuff," Burt said.

"It (the recruiting process) wasn't really bearing too much weight, but it was definitely heavy. Just bing able to finally move past it, it's a big relief," Burt said.

    John Burt chooses Texas. (Orangebloods)

Wide receiver John Burt has been pretty open in recent months that the Texas Longhorns were on top of his list and Texas was the team to beat for his commitment.

On Sunday afternoon, Burt backed up the talk by giving the Longhorns a commitment.

Burt, out of Tallahassee Lincoln, becomes the Longhorns' 13th commitment in the 2015 recruiting class. A four-star prospect and a member of the Rivals100, Burt is suddenly the highest-rated player in UT's class.

The 6-2, 180-pound Burt has built a strong relationship with the Texas coaches since they're arrival in Austin, including head coachCharlie Strong and assistant coach Chris Vaughn, who was active in Burt's recruitment.

Texas' chances were also bolstered by the fact that Burt has multiple family members that live in Austin. The talented receiver has made multiple visits to the UT campus over the last year and is scheduled to again be in Austin later this week.

Burt had recently narrowed his list to Texas, Auburn, Florida State and Miami, and he said he's known for a while that Texas was the place for him.

"The little things about Texas stood out more than any school," Burt said. "I knew about my decision two weeks ago."

When Orangebloods.com caught up with Burt at both the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge and The Opening, he mentioned that he was getting close to a decision and said it wasn't out of the realm of possibility that he could commit to Texas during his visit at the end of July. It turns out, the Longhorns didn't have to wait quite that long.

"The facilities are really nice. The coaches, there's something about the coaches that kind of draws me towards them," Burt said, detailing what put Texas out in front. "Coach Vaughn, he's a really cool guy and I talk to him a lot."

An athletic playmaker on the outside, Burt is ranked as the nation's seventh-best wide receiver prospect. He's ranked No. 61 in the Rivals100.

"Burt is a big-play wide receiver who has ideal size to play on the outside," said Rivals.com regional recruiting analyst Woody Womack. "High highlight tape is full of him going up and making tough catches, but he's also consistent on short and intermediate routes.

"He still needs to bulk up and add some more weight to his long frame, but for Texas to go into Florida and grab a guy of his status is a big move."

Burt is the Longhorns' first wide receiver commitment in the class and Texas' second commitment in the last six days, joining Louis Brown. The Longhorns are hoping to keep the momentum going on Monday, with defensive tackle Du'Vonta Lampkin expected his commitment to Texas.
