its debatable whether this is the best chilean generation ever, a lot of people here dispute that (the zamorano salas teams had a world class front line and solid defense, and the 60s and late 80s had some pretty good teams too, the problem for chile is ALWAYS depth). And they are definitely not in their best form, edu vargas wasnt even supposed to play the copa and came back from injury just to play it because of the lack of forwards, the other forwards they had got too old (suazo and paredes), likewise for defenders like ponce and marcos gonzalez who at least surpassed 1.80, as much as i like medel there is a reason that he plays as a midfielder for all his club teams. vidal also never really recovered his best form after the knee injury before the 2014 WC, he's still one of chile's best players but not quite the same as before. And as always, the chileans have discipline and choking issues, the vidal crash, jara finger, and struggles vs peru continue to show that.
Ive been living in Chile for 11 years now, my wife is chilean and so are my kids (even though the eldest hopped on the argentina bandwagon last WC, the little traitor, I blame my dad who talks mad about the chilean team jajaja). I've long had a "Ill root for chile vs argentina" policy, because the poor bas s have never won anything, and they rarely play argentina for anything meaningful anyways. I want chile to win, but I wouldnt even bet a cent on them. They've beaten argentina once in 38 official matches (+67 goal difference for argentina), and even though some of the players saturday played in that game (bravo, medel, beausejour), that was seven years ago. and its well known that argentina team was trying to get its coach fired. not to mention that chile has no depth, compared to argentina that has one of the deepest rosters on earth (outside of the defense at least). the last time chile lost in the estadio nacional was to... argentina, who manhandled them easily, chile was able to mask the domination by getting a broken goal in the 46th minute of the 2nd half (and that was with jara, who also pulled his finger stunt on higuain in that game).
At their top form, i agree that this chilean team could give argentina a game, not enough to be favorites but at least 50-50. But they are not in their top form, plus they've lost their biggest defender to suspension, and this generation has been owned by argentina since the 2007 u20 world cup, kind of like every other generation before it. How on earth should they be favorites? argentina were favorites when they choked in 2004 and 2007 to much better brasil teams than this chile. They are even bigger favorites this time.
