The Spurs have Baynes' full Bird rights, so they can stay over the cap if they use him. The only have Beli's early Bird rights, so they'd have to go under the cap to S&T him.
This is so that the Spurs' outgoing salary (Splitter and Baynes or Beli) comes close enough to matching that of Aldridge, right? Why is DET preferable?

West will complete the bigman rotation, the Spurs will have fantastic rotation there.
This makes sense considering the Splitter deal and DGreen leaving about $20mil on the table. PATFO had to go thru the motions, though. It would be atypical of them to put their eggs in one basket and dump Splitter and let a serviceable player like Baynes walk if they did not have some verbal commitment from LMA. Probably told Manu to hold off announcing and DWest to standby until all the pieces were in place.
Does anybody know what Atlanta sent back in that trade? Did I miss it?
Which is why the stupid NBA needs to re-seed after the regular season. Spurs should never have had to play the Clippers in the Round 1. Of course, if the Spurs had not lost to the pathetic Knicks, they could have taken the night off vs. the Pelicans in the last game of the season...oh, wait, they did.costing them a repeat.
Pierce may have bball smarts but he sure played his Clippers signing like Forrest Gump. "Stupid is as stupid does." Gotta be kicking himself that he didn't wait before seeing what DJordan was going to do. Pierce is now feeling a bit like Homer Simpson. "Dough!"
Offer him minimum contract with promise for coaching job after retirement...
WA has: Gortat, Nene, Gooden, Blair, Humphries…. how would West fit into that log-jam?
Nene is close to done, Gooden would be signed f they can't get West, Blair and Humphries don't factor. Gortat is a C.
