Damn, I like the move. He's an interesting player who has never really had a fair chance to show what he can do at the NBA level since he's been stuck in the cesspool known as the Kings organization.

First of all, he's not really a natural point guard. McCallum is more of a shooting guard in a point guard body. But, hey, it works for Patty Mills and with the return of Ginobili, the backup point guard really doesn't need to be a playmaker with natural passing acuity.

McCallum has good size (I'd say he's solidly built ~6-foot-2) for a point guard and pretty good athleticism. The Kings never really had him play much defense but he has the tools succeed. He won't be as good as Joseph on D but it wouldn't be a surprise if he becomes the best defensive PG on the team.

Why he might be even a better fit than Joseph is that he can shoot threes. And not only wide open threes, he could become the type of volume three-point shooter who can knock down contested looks. He slumped on three-pointers last year but going for the Kings to the Spurs will result in much better looks, which should elevate that percentage.

Comparing Joseph to McCallum:

-Both aren't really true point guards but they do a decent imitation.

-Both take care of the ball really well. Neither one turns it over and post 2-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratios.

-Joseph is the better slasher and finisher but McCallum is the better shooter.

-Joseph is a much better defender but McCallum has the tools to be a plus on that end as well.

Overall, it's a nice move. Didn't give up much and got a player who fits really well into Joseph's role. Given his shooting ability, McCallum in 2015-16 has the upside to be a better fit than Joseph was in 2014-15.

CoJo had a real-plus minus of +0.88, 25th among PG's in the NBA. McCallum, by contrast, was -4.43, 4th worst in the entire league.

If our goal is to win now we would've been better off signing Miller (-1.62, ranked 44th) or Nelson (-2.86, ranked 62nd) for the minimum. Doing so would've allowed us to preserve cap space while not surrendering any assets.

I think we are really aiming for spacing and more spacing. Which is what ray has an advantage over cory. The 2nd unit would be disgustingly good and we wouldnt have to rely on manu to do all the dirty work.
