Agreed!
People want to hear their favorite entertainers, the NBA understands their business.
But USA basketball...
I find it funny some reporters got so pissed.
KL should go to some local high school and allow their yearbook staff to interview him. Then call it his press conference.
Agreed!
Yeah, this Sam Smith has his anti-Spurs hat on it seems. Surely a professional journalist knows the value of a definite article (THE defense) in this situation. Seems like a slippery slight directed at Aldridge.
Maybe the Pop stance towards media is rubbing off on Kawhi. I've never seen Leonard even argue a call in a game. Has Kawhi ever even gotten a tech? Sam Smith's tweet is ignoring a lot of immaculately respectful Kawhi moments. Big words from a journalistic nobody.
Pop has made an art out of pointing out the banality of most sports media questions. His most effective tack? A simple moment of silence to let the stupidity breathe.
That would be great! Maybe they'll name him "most likely to pick your pocket at center court."
They know how the kid rocks. He ain't bout to switch up now because he getting shine. It shows he ain't fake and staying true to his true iden y.
Slowly turning into the Marshawn Lynch of basketball
this is getting shat on repeatedly on twitter
Wow this is just awsome. No wonder Pop loves this kid.
Yes. It's not mandatory. He can voluntarily give them the brush-off, and he can voluntarily reap the rewards of it, as well. Smith over did it, but Kawhi makes it easy with his at ude.
Comparing him to Tim and Pop is about as close as comparing him to Rasheed Wallace. Which is to say not so much.
Duncan doing some non-mandatory (by your claim) Team USA interviewing:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_vzonUWy-g
Tim doesn't like it, had more than paid his dues by that time, and still tortured himself for a minute.
Pop is a laugh riot half the time, running a schtick, and sometimes surly. But, a master, and thoughtful, Sager speech comes to mind. And, again, has paid his dues.
But, no matter how much I like Kawhi, he comes off a little Iverson:
We're talkin' 'bout interviews?! Interviews? It's not even a game, it's just interviews.
You're right. He is not obligated to do them, apparently. He could still stand to handle it better. It obviously ain't goin' over well with his current tack. Thumbing your nose at the media isn't all that humble, it's the epitome of ego. "I don't wanna and you can't make me."
Someone else said it, but it bears repeating, if it were another athlete, on another team, it would not be looked upon as such angelic behavior.
And to another poster. yes he's been arguing calls. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Working the refs might be worthwhile sometimes, but now that you mention it, I saw him cross the line a couple times last year. Borderline irritating. So, let's not go full Homer, and claim he NEVER argues a call.
I know, we're in SA. Kid can do no wrong.
His stance gives any player who wants it cover to do the same. Smith is used to a market where the media has the bully pulpit. The Spurs just don't care.
If Kawhi truly does not like interviews then redesigning with the Spurs was a good choice.
The media in San Antonio rarely reports anything negative about anyone on the team. if it
is less than a positive story it's not like the treatment he would get in New York or Chicago.
I have heard reports that he may not be picked for the team next year so if that's the case , if you
don't have anything good to say ...don't say anything.....
a lot of tweets but still nothing other than a quote of "I don't do media"
WTF does it matter, he hardly says anything when he does interviews anyway.
The whole "I'm just here to play basketball" thing is rather disingenuous, though. Every player that accepts a team USA invite knows they will have to deal with the media at some point. Pop and Tim have learned to just live with it.
Although I don't think Kawhi has recieved a tech he actually started complaining quite a bit about calls last year. Seems frustrated he wasn't getting the same calls alot of other superstars do.
But yes, Sam Smith is being a boy.
it looks like he barely talks to spurs staff and players. all sports "journalists", they're trivial parasites around sports anyway.
Poor journalists making themselves the victims in their own story about mean Kawhi. So mean..........![]()
The only thing that bothers me about this whole ordeal is ego.
Sam Smith making this public had everything to do with Sam Smiths' ego.
He could have taken the high road and called Kawhi to explain his concern like a mature adult would.
No, its not disingenuous. If there is such an obligation, they can lay it out in a contract.
The real missing point here is the media is lazy. The best players are not always oversharing egoists. The media should take this as a challenge, get to know Kawhi, what makes him tick, etc. Build up trust and a relationship. He owes them nothing. NOTHING.
