Spurs need 3 point shooters and someone who can guard point guards. Any prospects from the D-league?
Austin Spurs have Eddie and Orlando Johnson that may meet the need.
CoJo vs. McCallum isn't the argument. Team couldn't afford CoJo.
Debate should be McCallum vs. what else is out there right now. The third PG cannot be a Chris Quinn (who happens to be serving as "assistant housing advice officer" for the Heat now per Wiki).

Really hard to gauge Ray at the moment because of his lack of playing time. I definitely want to see him get some more run in Austin as well. Obviously not hoping for any major injuries but as the season goes on and Tony/Manu get more rest, we might get a better look at him. He seems to compete at least. I thought he dribbled the ball a bit too much last night but he at least knew to feed Boban since he had it going.
Cojo is getting 7M this year, Ray is getting less than a million. The Spurs only have the vet minimum to offer. He's just fine as a third string point guard to play occasional garbage time minutes.
Tony has been fantastic this year. Patty has performed his role well, so we haven't needed Ray.
If there are injuries, at that point we will see what we have in him.
Ex. When Kawhi has missed a game we have gotten good contributions from Kyle. Nothing earth-shattering, but playing his role well enough to allow us to win.
Can Ray do that if we miss Tony for a game here or there? We don't know.
This past game doesn't tell us much. Like K... mentioned, Kyle is a point forward and the Spurs are developing his decision making so they had him initiate the offense and make plays for others a whole lot of the time he was there without Tony and Lamarcus.
Simmons basically did his thing, and is kind of being developed to also make plays, so he finished a lot of possessions initiated by others, and occasionally also created for others.
Once Boban got in the game it was Boban time.
Ray didn't stand out much. I can't get anything out of the 76ers game in either direction as it respects to Ray.
This exactly is my issue with McCallum, he dribbles but always gets nowhere and then passes the ball after the offense loses all sense of flow. Just go run the film. He did the same in Sacramento, dribbled, stopped somewhere in mid range, then passes.... totally worthless move. Reminds me of what Cojo used to do. However, Cojo at least had the ability of taking a midrange jumper.
Yeah. He did remind me a bit of Cojo last night. Took Cojo four years in The Spurs system to get that "dribble around the arc like a hunchback" maneuver down. Ray got it down pat in 11 games, a quarter of the season, or 80 minutes of playing time (pulled figures out of ass). So, if he reminds us of Cojo we've already won. I still posit that he hasn't done much to embarass himself at this point. Point guard is the hardest position on the team, he's a third year player in his first few games here, and he's the backup's backup. I'm fine with him, thus far.
Early on in the season, he was having a few too many turnovers. Not last night. One bad entry pass.
He hasn't been aggressive with his penetration, but I am not surprised based upon what happens to KA when he makes a mistake...minimizing mistakes is probably priority number one for these guys. I am sure "don't up don't up" runs through their heads a lot with Pop watching from the sideline. Over time, he may be more aggressive as he was against us once. If not, he's cheap and expendable.
He is quick, so I am not sure what you mean, there, in another post. He has the physical tools to be a decent defender, I believe. At least as good as Patty and Parker.
As so many have stated, KA, Simms, Bobo, Parker, and Patty are doing a lot of play-making. And, good health has made him unneeded. He's played so little early that I am not sure that your're quite being fair. But, whatevs.
His job is not to turn the ball over & play respectable defense instead of extending the league, he's a 3rd stringer for a reason. What he's doing is better than Gary Neal launching bad shots & playing turnstile defense![]()
He's the same height as Parker. He could be quick, however a bigger guard will be more effective against the likes of Westbrook.
BTW, speaking about CoJo, he's shooting .29% from the 3 point line. Terrible as expected. I'm surprised that Chip couldn't work his magic on Cojo.
In other words, he can defend shoeless players. LOL.
don't like what little i've seen of him.
I suspect there is a limit to how much shot mechanics can improve someone's shot. If they had bad form b4, fixing it + repe ion would help, but hand/eye coordination is not the same for everyone.
Cojo also had a weird hitch on his shot, it isn't a quick release like Ray's, so shooting with a guy running at him can throw him off rhythm. In the Spurs he started to just avoid shooting a 3 altogether. Ray is aggressive with his shot if he's open as nd has a quick release, so that at least is more promising than say Simmons for example.
You reminded me of the one thing I really like about McCallum. He has a very quick release.
I can imagine the spurs not knowing what they want to do with Ray. Consider, this summer they didn't know if Parker would recover, if mills would recover, they didn't know Simmons would win mvp.
In that world you keep Ray as a possible backup pg, and prep him to replace the inevitable Parker injury.
But if Parker stays effective for two to three years and Simmons/Anderson are the de facto bench ball handlers would Ray be better served being a spot up shooter?
There's a huge difference between being the spurs starting point guard, the back up, and the bench unit. It's as almost as if the spurs are two different teams
McCallum sign up was for insurance purposes. Spurs didn't know if Parker would have any legs left. They didn't know if Anderson and Simmons could handle the ball.
I'm just not a fan of keeping him since he has the same problem defensively as Parker and Mills. Also, McCallum really isn't a PG, he's like Mills. He pretends to be a PG but it is obvious that he's more of a catch and shoot SG.
He's a poorman's Patty
Ray is so ing bad hahah
I thought he might be a rich mans Corey, he's a poor mans Corey, he's just so ing bad hahah
I still don't understand why people expect people under 6'4'' to be capable of locking down perimeter players. The league rules are pro offense, even freak of nature George hill can't lock down every pg he faces.
This is the same that makes people under appreciate Danny g.
I agree with you here, a good perimeter player cannot be locked down by another player who is shorter or the same height. You got to have someone bigger. That's why in the past the guys who were effective against Parker where players like Sefolosha (6'7") and Ariza (6'8").
Assigned to the Toros again.

McCallum is quick, athletic and has a very quick release.
Unfortunately, he's got t-rex arms and a t-rex basketball IQ. Those two drawbacks are hard to fix.
