That's a different rule. Fouling on a dead ball, i.e. before the ball is inbounded, was always a technical. They could have changed it - I don't keep up with every rule change these days. But that's the way it has been as long as I can remember.

The way they've always called it, if you foul a man on the floor before the ball is inbounded, it's a technical. Shot and ball. I can't figure why it would be different fouling a guy not on the floor.

That's what I thought. I'm not talking about the "hack a" strategy...I know you can't do that under 2 minutes in the 4th Q.

It's just a weird scenario that you don't see everyday. Fouling the guy who is going to inbound the ball.

The rule has been around for awhile. IIRC announcers were saying it for the spurs when they wanted to foul Jordan last year in the playoffs but they didnt and gave him freethrow plus ball possession because it was already under 2 minutes the second he passed the ball.

Patty is fine when his offense his on but he doesn't do much more than score and when he can't do that he is huge liability . Idk where I stand on him right now.
