Generic approval polls are less relevant when it becomes a 1-on-1 race. By the end of this campaign, Sanders supporters will probably end up disliking Clinton so much I wouldn't be surprised if they stayed home or went with Trump.
Of course, the same principle applies to the other side. If the GOP uses a brokered convention to oust Trump, his supporters will turn on the establishment nominee. Or he could go 3rd party and torpedo the GOP.
