So obviously the Lakers are the first franchise in sports history to cave in and cater to a long time star, right? Wrong, it happens, the Astros were destroyed for a decade the same exact way for holding on too long to Biggio and Bagwell at the expense of developing new talent (plus their refusal to take a step back and rebuild). The Lakers have had a pretty good tract record for over 60 years with 30 Finals appearances and 16 les, I'd rather be them even in the Kobe years winning 3+2 solo les than being the Nuggets and Pelicans/original Hornets who are usually flamingly mediocre and only ocassionally really good.

The term has no meaning anymore, just like racism or sellout. As a matter of fact if most people in the black community realized who the real sellouts/ Uncle Toms were, they'd stop supporting a number of people who are supposedly highly successful just because they have some money in their bank account. That's a different conversation though so back to the point, I don't know why it's so hard to just call Jason Whitlock a bad writer with foolish opinions (not necessarily my beliefs) than it is to throw out misguided racial insults because he doesn't keep it real so to speak.

His last game was him unfettered by criticism and given the eternal green light to do whatever he wanted, and he wanted to freeze out his entire team and hog as much glory as humanly possible. That's who Kobe is and has always been. But it's not his fault exactly. The post Jordan NBA market machine needed something, someone, and Kobe didn't quite fit that bill, especially after the Colorado debacle. Still, they kept the spin machine spinning and told you that what you see to be truth isn't truth and a lot of non-educated minds bought into it because they needed to.

There is no spoon.

I don't see how any true blue Lakers fan can back him? Even his final game was symbolic of the ball dominant, ego-centric, selfish play that sank many a Lakers playoff runs and seasons. Furthermore, the selfish bas announcing his retirement 10 games into the season (he knew what he was doing. He wanted the Jeter send off) created a circus around every Lakers game. Not the greatest environment in which to develop young players. And on that point, he did all in terms of mentoring (aside from maybe teaching D'Bust how to snitch).

And he wasn't even that "great," to the point where you could "put up with his ." As has been shown over the past couple of seasons, advanced metrics, which are infinitely more accurate than per game stats, have not been kind to him. Big man dependent like no other guard in history.

Good riddance. The NBA will be better without him.
