ok i was just wondering cuz my roomate believes the government and its laws are all ed up and believes we need to start all over. He also thinks the police can arrest you for anything, without no reason to. i personally think he believes this because he has a bad history with the cops with MIPs. I think its another case of "if things in society arent going my way, we need change." he just sounds like a radical liberal to me.
They are called Anarchists. They are the people who you see protesting at the WTO meetings. They really aren't associated with either party since they adhore the corrupt political system.

IRS, DOL, HHS, EPA - you name it; those people wield mad power. Can confiscate property, impose fines, lock bank accounts, etc....all without going to court, or answering to a higher authority. Most people don't get cross-wise with those folk, but if you do, you realize just how few "rights" we actually have. The fed is for all intent an purpose omnipotent, it just limits its scope to so few (relatively) of the citizens, that it doesn't get everyone worked up.
Anarchist is one category, but Repugs/conservatives/libertarians/far-right-fringe all share the sentiment that small-to-non-existent govt is desirable, while the vast majority of the US has welcomed and benefitted from larger govt. Some righties even consider federal taxation to be illegal.
Note the current Repug administration's willful and total incompetence in governing without any policies except to protect and enrich the rich + corps, while spending the federal govt into decades of debt, which is one of the true but unspoken Repug objectives of the Repug Iraq war, as part of their program "starve the beast". The Repugs have achieved their sinister, hidden objective of attacking federal govt with future budget constraints from the huge interest repayment alone that will constrain any future administrations plans. The Iraq war is being paid for with borrowing rather than from taxes. Some future admin, preferably Democratic, will be faced with raising taxes to pay for the Repug war and degt, at which point the Repugs will attack the Dems as "tax and spend" nutcases while concealing the fact that the Repugs are "borrow and spend" nutcases.

Case in point: the War in Iraq. It was a democratic president that argued for, and eventually got, the ability to go to war w/o a formal declaration from the congress. Now Republicans have used that ability to start (and continue) a "war" that you are totally opposed to. That "declaration" made it much tougher to start crap; now presidents order air-strikes, missile attacks, or invasions almost at a whim. , the past two presidents have both been accused of using our military specifically to give them political advantage. Not what the framers had in mind, but what you get as govt. expands its reach, power and influence.
You get what you pay for.
Bigger defense budget = HUGE defense industry w/influence over weapons systems and when/if we go to war.
Oilmen in office - Highest profits in the history of the world for US oil companies (couln't happen if the govt. didn't have so much influence over EVERYTHING)
Massive campaigns with massive contributors = (where to start), Pork, Gvt. Contracts, PARDONS.
Federal programs to help poor people (specifically single mothers) = Highest illegitimacy rates in the history of the civilized world. Rising crime from children w/o tradintional, nuclear homes. Our minorities slow, but steady, climb into the fabric of society was damn near stopped cold by Johnson's war on poverty. You think that old, white, rich, East Texan REALLY liked black people, or wanted to really help them? Don't know many old, rich, white East Texans, do you?
The Federal government's power is obscene. Am I the ONLY one that recognizes EXXON/Mobile just passed Wal-Mart as the larges corporation in the World? EXXON/Mobile being an oil-company now that we have oil-men in the WH.
Of course Wal-Mart, based out of ARKANSAS became the largest company while we had a president from ARKANSAS who did a great deal to facilitate business with CHINA where Wal-Mart now is able to source over 90% of its product, and make a much higher profit than pre- 1992.
I'm beginning to make stock-picks based on whose in leadership positions in Congress and the White-House, and you know what, I'm kicking ASS. Don't know crap about the companies I'm investing in, other than who they support & give money to. If that AIN'T govt. run amok, I don't know what is.

Competent, serious govt, of any size, is what I'd like to see. I don't even ing care if the Repugs are running the govt, if they run it seriously, competently, transparently, and in good will. But, the Repugs are doing NONE of the above, purposely.
Part of their sinister plan to destroy federal govt is to fail to deliver federal services (DHS/FEMA, Katrina, etc) with the specific goal of PISSING OFF and discouraging as many citizens as possible, so that US citizens will tar all federal got all the time when in fact the real up is just the Repug's intentionally bad govt.
Govt size and power are not inherently evil or bad. Bad govt of any size is ALWAYS bad.

Libertarians want no government, Progressives want to reform the system, but not our representative Republic. The system works when you have competent people, but when you have cronies you get what happened in NO.
