MIAMI (TICKER) -- Forward Shandon Anderson was signed by the Miami Heat on Sunday, giving them some much needed depth on the perimeter.
After trading starters Lamar Odom and Caron Butler to the Los Angeles Lakers for Shaquille O'Neal in the offseason, the Heat have started Udonis Haslem and Rasual Butler, who had a combined 52 starts entering this season, in the frontcourt.
Miami (4-2) started the season with four straight wins before leading scorer Dwyane Wade injured his left ankle in a 113-93 loss to Dallas on Thursday, further shortening the bench.
To make room for Anderson, the Heat placed forward Christian Laettner on the injured list with right knee tendinitis and waived rookie Matt Freije.
A 6-6 swingman, Anderson was waived by the New York Knicks on Wednesday after appearing in just one game this season. He scored 7.9 points in 80 games for New York last season.
A 1996 second-round pick of Utah, the 30-year-old Anderson has averaged 8.2 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game in 606 career contests with the Jazz, Rockets and Knicks. He helped Utah reach the NBA Finals in 1997 and 1998.
