Thank you so much for posting this, my heart frozen in its tracks at the thought of TD being a maroon 5 fan...you cleared it right up and all is right in the universe again

Popovich has told Duncan to come around, to be here, to do what he wants. “If he wants to go on a scouting trip, fine. If he wants his own station in training camp, he has it. He’s in charge. He can tell me exactly what he wants to do. But I’m not paying him a penny.”

Reminded that Duncan will still be receiving Spurs checks this season on what is the final year of his contract, Popovich laughed again.

    “Oh, I forgot.”

Most in the organization think Duncan will eventually join the franchise in a full-time capacity. They guess he won’t coach but will instead focus on personnel. Duncan has long been intrigued by the methods that Popovich and Buford use to identify talent.

Report: Tim Duncan expected to join Spurs front office

Legend has been around the team and could join the team in a personnel capacity

Tim Duncan, predictably, has been a ghost since he retired this summer. He did one televised interview with a friend, and beyond that, he has been gone. No commercials, no TV appearances, he's not announcing his new venture capital firm or doing media appearances. He has just slid into the the enormous shadow his game left upon the NBA and probably hung out with his kids a lot.

    That's for the public, though.

The Spurs, they get to keep him. Duncan has been around the team, the San Antonio Express-News reports, and many inside the organization expect him to take a personnel position with the team.

They still have him around, though. Duncan hasn't been in the Spurs' practice facility every day this summer, but he was there this week. He hits the weight machines, does some shooting, hangs around the guys.

Most in the organization think Duncan will eventually join the franchise in a full-time capacity. They guess he won't coach but will instead focus on personnel. Duncan has long been intrigued by the methods that Popovich and Buford use to identify talent.

Duncan has at times disagreed with their decisions only to be proven wrong. He's curious why.
Source: Hole in his gut, Spurs' Popovich moves on - San Antonio Express-News.

This is what having a great player so tied to one franchise does for you. He becomes tied to the future even while he's a pillar of the past. Duncan just being around puts guys on notice.

They'll have Duncan to learn from, to get advice from, and more than anything, to live up to his standard of excellence and professionalism. The Spurs built their culture around Duncan, now they can use his legacy and quiet presence to sustain it.

You walk in as a brash rookie and meet five-time NBA champion, former MVP, future first-ballot Hall-of-Famer, Greatest Power Forward of All Time Tim Duncan, and that will show you where you stand in the ranks of the game right quick.

Duncan being around will make it easier for Gregg Popovich, too, to help him make the transition. It will make it easier on Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Kawhi Leonard. It'll be easier on the coaches, and when he's shown at games, it'll be good for fans.

Duncan's departure will not be easy, but he'll at least be there to help ease the pain of the separation, and if nothing else, this story tells something we all know but it's important to say: Tim Duncan will always be a Spur.

This is a pretty good read that covers the rise and fall of Robert Swift. I placed this here for this story:
Still, life is not so bad. Ichiro Suzuki hears of Swift’s Japanese roots and asks to meet him. Swift buys a kick-ass truck, eats like a king. And he gets to play against his idols. The first time he guards Tim Duncan, Swift pushes up on him on the block, trying to impress him.

“Nah, nah, don’t do that,” Duncan says.
Swift is surprised. Duncan never talks to opponents. And yet...
“The ball’s going to swing to the other side, get position,” Duncan continues.
The ball swings. Swift follows orders, shuffling his feet across the lane, staying behind Duncan.
“No, further up,” Duncan says. Swift takes a half-step.
“No, a little higher, don’t let me duck in on you.”
    Swift complies.
“All right, now come back,” Duncan says, moving across the lane. “The ball’s about to be swung back, but it’s not coming to me this time so don’t worry about it. But now you know how to play it.”
With that, Duncan plays hard the rest of the game, but the moment sticks with Swift. He hopes to be that kind of veteran some day

Simply the best. What a true professional in every shape of the way; still can't believe he's not going to be out there for opening tip next month

Freakin Duncan, my fave player all time & the reason i started following the Spurs 100%. Before Duncan, I followed all Texas teams casually, but Duncan changed that for me. I still kinda pull for the Rockets (maybe 3 or 4 games/yr depending on their opponent) & for the Mavs (anywhere from 20-30 games/yr cuz of Dirk), but my loyalty is & has been 100% to the Spurs since Duncan. His selflessness & heart for the game, the team, & players in general is something that we were privileged as Spurs fans to witness night in/night out with front row seats for 19 straight years. There will NEVER be another ambassador in this league like Duncan, but if somehow someone comes along & is able to do only half of what Duncan did for this league, the league will be lucky it struck gold twice

His Legend will do nothing, but grow from here on in. Just wait two decades from now: the stories from players and fans. He will be close to Sainthood.

I started following the Spurs back in '87? '88? I'm a bit under an influence... but let me digress... I started following the Spurs because of Terry mings because of his skin condition. I thought he was a "hero". So naive a thought, but... whatevs. That got me into b-ball. Then Dave and Sean joined the next year...

I casually started following basketball in the late 80s (also around '87 or '88) & remember Magic's Lakers against Isaiah's Pistons in the Finals. My mom would be watching her novelas & during commercial breaks my brothers or I would put it on the game. Later came Jordan's Bulls & I kinda started following the Rockets & Spurs. I always thought "what the heck is up with that Dallas team? They really suck!," but naturally I was always pro-Texas teams. Then Robinson & Sean came along & got me into watching the Spurs, but Olajuwan/Thorp/Kenny/Horry/Ellie (i.e. Clutch City) got me cheering on them since they brought Texas our first championship.. but i always wished for Robinson/****** to get theirs. I'd pull for Spurs to win & then for the Rockets to win. Then Robinson got hurt & the Spurs won the 1st pic in the lottery. I had never seen any games of Duncan in college, but i saw the highlights. I thought he might be pretty good in the NBA (LOL @me), but he just didn't seem flashy enough (again, LOL @me) for me to get excited. But once i started following the Spurs in Duncan's first season, which wasn't until like the 6th or 7th game, I was hooked! To see this young man just take it to these established superstars & dominate them in his rookie season (i.e. Karl Malone), & in the way he did it really quietly, made me a fan of him & this team. At the end of games his stats would be 25/14/4/3 & I'd think "When did he get all these #s?"...

Anyways, long story short, I'm glad he ended up on the Spurs & not any other team haha. I'd probably hate the crap out of Timmy while he was winning les for another team- plus I'd prolly be a Rockets fan, smh
