Donald Trump's transition has hurt his popularity, not helped

he will enter the White House on Friday far weaker in that regard than any president in decades.

Trump is unique among the last seven presidents-elect:

He is the only one whose popularity dropped between election day and his swearing-in

5 Ways To Measure Trump’s Illegitimacy

    First,

there is the indisputable loss of the popular vote that indelibly taints him as a minority president. He let fly in a tweet on November 27, “I won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally.” But Trump fiction cannot erase the fact that he lost by 2.8 million votes.

    Second,

there is the criminal espionage of a hostile foreign power to aid his election, the Russian hacking of the DNC and the Clinton campaign, which Trump brazenly encouraged. The former top expert on Russia for MI6, the British intelligence service, also claims in a dossier that Trump’s campaign collaborated and coordinated with the Russians, and that the Russians recorded Trump engaged in compromising behavior.

    Third,

there is the intervention of FBI director James Comey, who announced late in the campaign that Hillary Clinton was again a su ious citizen under investigation, his interference triggered by a cabal of politically motivated agents in the New York bureau connected to Trump adviser Rudy Giuliani—an act in flagrant violation of strict Department of Justice guidelines against meddling in elections.

Whatever the motivations of anyone involved, whether of Putin or Comey, whether vengeance or arrogance, the FSB and the FBI assaults on the electoral process, separately and parallel, had the effect of a coup d’etat.

    Fourth,

Republican-sponsored voter ID laws suppressed the black vote and possibly tipped the states of Wisconsin and North Carolina.

    Fifth,

Trump’s campaign was malicious, dishonest and disreputable, unlike that of any previous major party presidential candidate in the entire history of the country. He is the only one to have waged a campaign from beginning to end that whipped up virulent elements of racism, misogyny, nativism, mockery of the disabled and anti-Semitism.

His venomous campaign has not faded in memory. “Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence,” said Meryl Streep

How Trump Could Kill a Plan to Get You Overtime Pay

Donald Trump ran for president as the billionaire who would champion working people.

As the president-elect put it in one of the major economic speeches of his campaign:

"Too many of our leaders have forgotten that it's their duty to protect the jobs, wages and well-being of American workers before any other consideration."

At stake is the possibility of overtime pay for about 4 million workers around the country.

Labor advocates say some employers have been playing games with who is considered a white-collar worker.

Trump's pick for labor secretary has attacked the idea of expanding overtime, and the president-elect himself seems skeptical.

When Trump was asked about the rule in August, he spoke of "a delay or a carve-out of sorts for our small business owners." It's not clear from his comments that Trump actually knew the details of the pending Obama changes.

Andrew Puzder, Trump's pick to be secretary of labor and the CEO of a fast-food company, has spoken out strongly against the overtime rule.
In a 2014 Wall Street Journal op-ed, Puzder warned against "rewarding time spent rather than time well spent."

"What they lose in overtime pay they gain in the stature and sense of accomplishment that comes from being a salaried manager," Puzder said of workers trying to climb the management ladder.

the Trump administration could decide to stop defending the rule or not to appeal any judgment against it.

Donald Trump Faces Four Looming Flashpoints

    North Korea

North Korea’s stepped-up development of nuclear weapons and long-range ballistic missiles may present the Trump administration with its first great international challenge. In recent years, the North Koreans appear to have made substantial progress in producing such missiles and designing small nuclear warheads to fit on them.

    The South China Sea

The next most dangerous flashpoint? The ongoing dispute over control of the South China Sea, an area bounded by China, Vietnam, the Philippines, and the island of Borneo. Citing ancient ties to islands in those waters, China now claims the entire region as part of its national maritime territory. Some of the same islands are, however, also claimed by Brunei, Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Although not claiming any territory in the region itself, the U.S. has a defense treaty with the Philippines,

    The Baltic Sea Area

If Hillary Clinton had been elected, I would have placed the region adjoining the Baltic Sea at the top of my list of potential flashpoints, as it’s where Vladimir Putin would have been most likely to channel his hostility to her in particularand the West more generally. That’s because NATO forces have moved most deeply into the territory of the former Soviet Union in the Baltic states of Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania. Those countries are also believed to be especially vulnerable to the kind of “hybrid” warfare—involving covert operations, disinformation campaigns, cyberattacks, and the like—that Russia perfected in Crimea and Ukraine.

    The Middle East

The Middle East has long been a major flashpoint. President Obama, for instance, came to office hoping to end U.S. involvement in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, yet U.S. troops are still fighting in both countries today. The question is: How might this picture change in the months ahead?

Given the convoluted history of the region and its demonstrated capacity for surprise, any predictions should be offered with caution. Trump has promised to intensify the war against ISIS, which will undoubtedly require the deployment of additional American air, sea, and ground forces in the region

Business Euphoria Over Trump Gives Way To Caution And Confusion

as the president-elect fires off mixed and sometimes confusing messages on healthcare, taxes, and trade.

Doubts deepened over the weekend as Trump declared he would replace President Barack Obama’s signature healthcare plan known as Obamacare with “insurance for everybody” – a goal far beyond Republican designs – and criticized a key component of a plan in Congress to overhaul corporate taxes.

Doubts deepened over the weekend as Trump declared he would replace President Barack Obama’s signature healthcare plan known as Obamacare with “insurance for everybody” – a goal far beyond Republican designs – and criticized a key component of a plan in Congress to overhaul corporate taxes.

‘We are not really sure what he means by that’,”

A veteran Republican financial lobbyist said she is under constant pressure from clients to predict what the new administration is planning, but she has no reliable answers for them.

    Guess Who's Been Advising Trump?

Guess who's been advising Donald Trump on his picks for the people who will control foreign policy in a Trump administration?

Well, here's a hint: who's the most murderous, toxic, partisan psychopath you can think of?

One who gained so much infamy for his services to the Bush administration that he had to flee the country to avoid the law?

If you guessed Erik Prince, notorious mercenary and founder of Blackwater, you win the dubious prize:

Erik Prince, America’s most notorious mercenary, is lurking in the shadows of the incoming Trump administration. A former senior U.S. official who has advised the Trump transition told The Intercept that

Prince has been advising the team on matters related to intelligence and defense, including weighing in on candidates for the defense and state departments....

On election night, Prince’s latest wife, Stacy DeLuke, posted pictures from inside Trump’s campaign headquarters as Donald Trump and Mike Pence watched the returns come in, including a close shot of Pence and Trump with their families....

Speaking of families, his not-yet-quite-so-notorious sister, Betsy DeVos, will be a member of the Trump administration, tasked with destroying the public education system:

Prince’s sister, billionaire Betsy DeVos, is Trump’s nominee for education secretary and Prince (and his mother) gave large sums of money to a Trump Super PAC....

MOVING VANS ARRIVE AT WHITE HOUSE TO REMOVE ALL TRACES OF COMPETENCE, DIGNITY

WASHINGTON — Moving vans arrived at the White House on Wednesday to remove all traces of competence and dignity.

Working around the clock, movers started clearing out the optimism and progress that had ac ulated during the past eight years.

“Once we’ve packed up that stuff, we’ll start moving out the wisdom and maturity,”

    one of the movers said.

“The guy who’s moving in wants all of that gone.”

After the movers complete their work,

a cleaning crew will come in and scrub the White House of every last speck of compassion.

The movers are working under a strict deadline, since the White House needs to be totally stripped of decency by nine o’clock on Friday morning, the mover said.

“The new guy wants the place to be completely empty, ” he said. “He has a lot of crap.”

Donald Trump admitted he met Vladimir Putin in 2015 interview, despite recently saying he hadn’t

President-elect Trump may say now that he never met Putin, but that wasn't what he said in 201

President-elect Donald Trump may be trying to downplay his relationship with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, but in an October 2015 interview, he openly admitted to having met the despot.

During the radio interview in question with conservative talk show host Michael Savage, Trump said that he had met Putin “one time … a long time ago” and claimed that he “got along with him great.”

Trump also praised Putin’s atrocities-filled military campaign in Syria, describing it as “wonderful” because the Russians were “really hitting ISIS hard.”

When Savage asked if Trump felt he could “do business with Vladimir” if he was elected president, Trump replied, “Yes, I do. I think I would get along very well. I had the Miss Universe pageant, believe it or not, in Moscow two years ago. I got many of the Russian leaders, the top people in Russia, honestly . . . These are people, they are looking to do things.”

This isn’t the first time that Trump has admitted to having met Putin. His previous occasions included a November 2013 interview with MSNBC’s Thomas Roberts, in which Trump said, “I do have a relationship [with Putin], and I can tell you that he’s very interested in what we’re doing here today.”

In an address at the CPAC conference in March 2014, when he bragged that “Putin even sent me a present” after the Miss Universe contest; at an address at the National Press Club in May 2014, he said, “I spoke, indirectly and directly, with President Putin” during his stay in Moscow for the pageant.

During a debate on Fox Business News in November 2015, Trump claimed (inaccurately) that he had gotten to know Putin “very well because we were both on 60 Minutes(which would have been impossible since their footage was shot on different continents).

Once Trump’s alleged relationship with Putin became a controversy, however, he changed his tune.

In July he told George Stephanopoulos of ABC News that “I have no relationship to — with him. I have no relationship with him.” He has repeated these claims ever since, most recently on Twitter.

Trump Makes $25M Payment To Settle Trump University Fraud Lawsuits

Out of the settlement, $21 million will go to about 7,000 former Trump University enrollees in two California class action lawsuits and the remaining $4 million will cover a case brought against Trump by New York's attorney general Eric Schneiderman,

Behind the media-manufactured facade of white working class men as the cackling villains who gave the country to Donald Trump, in other words, lies a reality far more in keeping with the complexities of American electoral politics: a ramshackle coalition of many different voting blocs and interest groups, each with its own assortment of reasons for voting for a candidate feared and despised by the US political establishment and the mainstream media. That coalition included a very large majority of the US working class in general, and while white working class voters of both genders were disproportionately more likely to have voted for Trump than their nonwhite equivalents, it wasn’t simply a matter of whiteness, or for that matter maleness.

It was, however, to a very great extent a matter of social class. This isn’t just because so large a fraction of working class voters generally backed Trump; it’s also because Trump saw this from the beginning, and aimed his campaign squarely at the working class vote. His signature red ball cap was part of that—can you imagine Hillary Clinton wearing so proletarian a garment without absurdity?—but, as I pointed out a year ago, so was his deliberate strategy of saying (and tweeting) things that would get the liberal punditocracy to denounce him. The tones of sneering contempt and condescension they directed at him were all too familiar to his working class audiences, who have been treated to the same tones unceasingly by their soi-disant betters for decades now.
