Because Obama wanted us to think there were 57 states.
As you point out, there was no political benefit to saying there were 57 states. But Conway's alternative fact was intended to reinforce her political point in the interview.

Kinda like "accidently" missing MLK's rock head bust where it had taken root for months.
The reporter was looking to create a controversy. I won't defend that reporter.

youre right if only we'd focused more we could have done something about the executive orders

guys we need a new strategy, this one isnt working
You should burn some generators, smoke some weed and wear some black masks and hoodies. That will change things.

In Conway's case I don't believe she tried to create a controversy. She just got flummoxed and made a mistake. She dances on the edge of (mistake) a lot as she makes her fight(s). I see it and every time she halts just short of mistake I thank my lucky stars. This time she was not as fortunate and crossed the line. She's not seasoned and CNN/MSNBC knows that and ventures to take advantage. She'll take on seasoning and she'll learn.

Kellyanne Goebbels Reportedly Involved In Fist Fight At Inaugural Ball

Gasparino wrote on his Facebook page that "inside the ball we see a fight between two guys in tuxes and then suddenly out of nowhere came trump adviser Kellyanne Conway who began throwing some mean punches at one of the guys."

"Whole thing lasted a few mins no one was hurt except maybe the dude she smacked. Now I know why trump hired her."

The New York Daily News reports that the incident took place at the Liberty Ball, where

"Conway apparently punched one of them in the face with closed fists at least three times, according to stunned onlookers."

OMG too good! New Yorkers hold vigil for Bowling Green Massacre AT Bowling Green

In lower Manhattan, at the very bottom of the island, there’s a small, fenced-in park that dates to colonial times. It is in fact the oldest public park in New York City, and it shares a name with a subway stop on the busy 4 and 5 lines.

    It is called Bowling Green.

And on Friday night, some truly brilliant and marvelous New Yorkers put it to extremely good use:

“We’re commemorating the victims of Bowling Green,” said Chris Bauer as he stifled a smile. “It never happened so they were never commemorated.”

Bauer and a handful of others stood near the Lower Manhattan park, holding signs and shouting, “We all are Bowling Green, never remember never forget.”

Not really. Using the term Massacre seems as calculated and on brand as saying "American Carnage". Once it became the laughing stock it did she attempted to say that she meant to say "Terrorist". For as many times "Terrorist" gets used it seems hard to believe that she would make that gaffe. The problem is that she's lied so much that even if it was a gaffe, then she doesn't get the benefit of the doubt.

Kellyanne Conway was making the 'Bowling Green massacre' a go-to lie before she got called on it

it turns out she misspoke that exact way twice:

"He did [call for a temporary ban on Iraqi refugees], it’s a fact," she said of Obama.

"Why did he do that? He did that for exactly the same reasons.

He did that because two Iraqi nationals came to this country, joined ISIS, traveled back to the Middle East to get trained and refine their terrorism skills and come back here and

were the masterminds behind the Bowling Green massacre of taking innocent soldiers' lives away."

Conway was referencing the case of two Iraqi men, Mohanad Shareef Hammadi and Waad Ramadan Alwan, who entered the U.S. under the guise of refugees in 2009 and were arrested in 2011 in Bowling Green, Kentucky, on charges related to terrorism.

But when Cosmopolitan.com reached out to the FBI to verify details of Conway’s account,

a spokesman wrote in an email that “a couple of your facts seem incorrect” and

provided a link to a Justice Department press release, which, he said, “outlines all the public information and timeline.”

What details? Basically all of them.

The two men in question were radicalized before coming to the United States.

They did not travel back to the Middle East after arriving here, according to records of the case.

Obama did not ban Iraqi refugees, though he had tens of thousands of them rescreened and temporarily toughened the visa process.

And, of course, describing things the men did in Iraq as “the Bowling Green massacre” is calculated to frighten Americans by suggesting that Iraqis are coming to the U.S. and massacring people. These don’t have to have been good guys for this to be yet another Kellyanne Conway lie.
