I have no issue with Mills. While I think in this market it's a discount based on raw production, hes clearly as valuable as the contract and I think it accurately reflects his on the court warts.

He's a good player to have, even at that money if he were someone that was solely a regular season minutes soaker. Unfortunately, for SA's build, that is not the case and he gets exposed in the playoffs vs any team that matters.
If he can't play minutes in the playoffs against GS, who cares about soaking RS minutes? The Spurs were about 20 games safe of missing the playoffs last year.

I DO think Mills was severely impacted last year by having no Kawhi on the floor. Against the Warriors, he's a tough guy to play out there but with one less key defender/offensive threat, they were able to key in on him.

Making any sweeping conclusions based solely on the Dubs series seems pretty stupid to me. All bets were off when Kawhi went down tbh.

Mills was always a 2-guard in a point guards body. His value came playing off Manu. Last season he had to handle the ball too much because TP and Manu couldn't collapse a defense in PR anymore. Murray will start, White & Mills off the bench. Patty goes back to playing off the ball where he's most valuable. Can also go back to using his energy to harass PGs up the court. He's a limited player, but in this role and in this market, the money is fair.

4 years is a long time though.

I'm not doing that. Mills has proven more often than not he struggles in the playoffs with Kawhi present or not.

If his value came playing of Manu (who's an all-time talent obviously) that is a major concern seeing as Manu is gone, TP is declined and there is no one nearly as good as Manu in the fold (another obvious statement)

Yeah, and that's sort of the problem. If the only way you can get the backup PG you want is to sign him for 4 years? Maybe you take a flyer on Murray, at least for one year. Then, if you have to, you go out and hire a starter for some real money.

You can put a patch on an old pair of jeans. Your ass won't show, but you'll still be wearing an old pair of jeans.

I don't think Manu is the only guy he can play off, it's just who he played off with us. I think Mills can be very successful in this role playing off a PG who can get into the lane on a PnR, draw a double, and kick the ball out so it swings to an open shooter. The team had a dearth of players capable of this, and I think they are hoping Murray and White develop into those guys. Pretty dangerous because it takes young PGs time to figure out decision making - when to pass to the roller, when to attack, and when to kick. But I agree they need more ball handlers to initiate offense, which will result in big playing time for Murray, White, and even Simmons. Mills plays off those guys well, theoretically, and the per year average fits the market. A shame it took a 4 year deal. At least he's an easy guy to root for.

Because there are 28 other teams. And Warriors have a unique combo at the guard position. We still need shooters, and Mills fits that. He can play with Murray also, which is a plus. I must admit, I rather Joseph 5 mil cheaper.

    1. Because there are only about 400 people in the world out of 7 billion capable of playing in the NBA
    2. Because you watch it

Pretty obvious tbh...no one is lining up to watch a cop write tickets

I agree with you. Plus you need to factor in Patty's locker room presence that PATFO values highly. Nobody under contract prior to Patty's re-signing seems like a very good, vocal leader. That is not Kawhi's nature any more than it was Tim's. The team needed a Manu replacement (assuming he retires). As Manu was to Tim, PATFO plans Patty to be for Kawhi.

I like the direction the team is headed. I've said it before, this is circa 2000-2002. You build around Kawhi and hope you get lucky with your guys developing into a Manu or TP9. SA is like the worst destination for an FA, so you have to trust Pop and RC will make the right moves within their power. You keep knocking on the door a la TD and eventually beat the Lakers
