I imagine that this was already planned when they drafted him. Hope they can get Lalanne to agree to one as well.

Since the Spurs used the non-taxpayer MLE to sign Gay they are now limited to total salaries of $125.2 million. If Simmons is signed for 8.4 million then that will leave a total of $17.8 million to sign Pau, Ginobili (if he come back) and a 15th player. It seems to me that the Spurs really need to sign Mulitunov this year because we need additional bigs and to lock him into the rookie salary structure. It seems to me that if Simmons is re-signed this almost assures that Pau's deal will be multi-year. The Gay signing makes it less likely that both Simmons and Hanga will both be on the team.
What's the deal with this hard cap? I thought you could sign minimum contracts no matter how far over the cap you are?

Nope. The hard cap is truly that. I honestly think the Spurs will duck the tax, though, let alone the apron.

Rakeem Christmas got waived, what do you guys think of him? How much are those 2 way contracts for $ wise? Kinda wish they would boost the salaries of the G league guys, its always been crazy low, around $25k right?

Like him, and it's likely he's the closest genetic match we're going to get to Tim. If the body-swap is going to ever work, we need to go for it now.

They'll likely be in the $300k range. Not bad.

Yeah I'm suprised, I would expect for someone to snatch him up, he didn't get many minutes in Indy but thought he had potential.

I think it's safe to assume they're going to do what they can to be under the lux tax. With what Cleveland, Portland, and Golden State are going to be paying in penalties alone, they're going to have a couple million coming to them if they're under the threshold.

Spurs would be worse rolling with White/Forbes as the back up SGs. They'd get nuked on the wing in the NBA. Worse than the time Spurs got nuked when they ran Mason/Hill on the wing.

You'll see 3 PGs w/ one developing in Austin ( probably White) until TP gets back. Then Forbes will then probably join White.

LMA is probably not too thrilled about getting his touches reduced. We'll see how that plays out.

But considering the UFA market and realistic options to fit under that salary threshold after the Patty signing, I don't think Spurs could do better. Gay has talent and talent where the Spurs need it, it allows them to be more versatile on both ends vs. the best teams that play that style. It's a low risk, high reward move that I'm thrilled they made considering the alternative options.
Backup SG is a position of concern for sure. Maybe they're talking to boston about crowder?

Why do the Spurs have a hard cap? Aren't there other teams way over what the Spurs are paying?

Yes, but those teams haven't used the non-tax-payer's MLE yet. Using that is essentially a promise that SA won't go over the apron.

Crowder, who I would like to have (pipe dream) is a SF. But Simmons is still in play, and we have a plethora of combos.

What I should of asked is, does every team have a hard cap, or do you have to do something to trigger it?

You have to trigger it by using the NTP MLE or receiving a player in an S&T. If you do neither, you can spend as much as you want. GS used the TP MLE to sign Young, and the Cavs have just used Bird rights to sign Korver.

Interesting. Didn't know any of that. What's the best website to go to, to read about this stuff?
