One media outlet that didn’t gloss over the president’s outlandish claims, however, was the New York Times itself.

Reporters there quickly connected the dots and linked Trump’s tweet to a Fox & Friends segment that appeared Saturday morning.

In that segment, false claims that an Army General, Tony Thomas, made at a recent conference in Aspen, Colorado, were parroted as fact.

Foxnews.com published the claims made by Gen. Thomas as well.

Now the New York Times is demanding an apology from the Fox News Channel. “I am writing on behalf of The New York Times to request an on-air apology and tweet from Fox & Friends in regards to a malicious and inaccurate segment ‘NY Times leak allowed ISIS leader to slip away,’” the letter said, as reported by Hadas Gold of Politico.

There were no New York Times reporting on this subject at the time. And theTimes story Gen. Thomas cited as the basis of his claim in Colorado, didn’t appear until nearly a month later, as the Times pointed out again today.

“TheNew York Times story in question was published on June 8, more than three weeks after the raid,” the letter states.

“Furthermore, the Times described the piece to the Pentagon before publication and they had no objections. No senior American official complained publicly about the story until now, more than two years later.”

The real question is, will the president retract his tweet after Fox News, his source, retracts its reporting?

I think we know the answer to that.
