Jeff Sessions Weighs Competing Special Counsel Focused On Clinton, Democrats

President Trump has questioned why the Justice Department isn’t looking into Democrats.

The attorney general says he’s on the case.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions,

facing a dissatisfied boss and increased scrutiny over his knowledge of the Trump campaign’s dealings with Russia,

is weighing whether to appoint a separate special counsel to zero in on allegations against presidential rival Hillary Clinton and other Democrats, a Justice Department official disclosed in a letter to Republican members of Congress on Monday.

Appointing a second special counsel would be seen as a move to appease President Donald Trump, who has long been critical of Sessions and recently publicly aired his frustrations with the traditional divide between the White House and the Justice Department and his inability to aim the nation’s premier law enforcement agency at his political adversaries.

The disclosure came in a letter from a top Justice Department official to Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.), who chairs the House Judiciary Committee.

Goodlatte and other House Republicans had sent letters to the Justice Department in July and September featuring

a wide-ranging list of 14 allegations against Democrats that Republicans wanted investigated.

In addition to raising concerns about the handling of the Clinton investigation,

which is already being examined by the Justice Department’s inspector general,

the letter raised questions about the Clinton Foundation, mining company Uranium One and other topics.

Atty. Gen. Sessions to again explain his incorrect statements on contacts with Russia during 2016 campaign

Atty. Gen. Jeff Sessions is scheduled to testify at 10 A.M. Eastern to the House Judiciary Committee.

He will try to square his past assertions that he knew of no contacts between the Trump campaign and Russians with new claims in court do ents and congressional testimony alleging that he did.

Sessions, who was Trump’s first senatorial endorser and a key foreign policy advisor during the campaign, got an early hint of the treatment he is likely to face when Democrats castigated him Monday from the Senate floor.

“Regrettably, Atty. Gen. Sessions, our nation’s chief law enforcement officer, seems to have a real problem with telling the truth” about his actions and those of the Trump team, Sen. Al Franken

Franken went through a litany of statements Sessions had made that have now been contradicted by others in the Trump orbit.

He accused the attorney general, a four-term senator from Alabama until his Cabinet appointment, of “convenient amnesia.”

“He has responded not by coming clean and admitting that his initial testimony was inaccurate but by shifting his story and moving the goalposts,”

“It’s clear that the Kremlin tested the waters with Sen. Sessions as it did with so many other Trump campaign officials,”

Leahy said.

“It’s equally clear the attorney general has concealed his contacts with Russian officials…He needs to come back again, and testify again, under oath.”

On three occasions Sessions has appeared before the Senate to issue denials of activity, only to have it proved later to be incomplete or wrong.

He seems more worried that Putin is "insulted" by the accusations than he is by the impact these operations had on our democratic processes. The shocking comments about Putin are likely to drown out everything else that has happened so far.
The statement is a head-turner. It is part of the ongoing puzzle from this administration: What explains Trump's insistence on taking a relatively positive stance toward the Russian government despite the overwhelming evidence we have of an ongoing cyberwar against democratic elections and a terrible record on human rights.
