Fusion GPS is attempting to make themselves look transparent after doing everything in their power beforehand to not be transparent.

Why did they fight so hard to not have it released and why have they fought the committees requests so hard?

I would guess not much. Steele's contacts were somewhat unique, which is why he was brought in. Steele probably did get some direction from Fusion based on earlier work, as in what to ask about. I can see that based on the released testimony.
It is a good distraction from the main points of the dossier, which seem to be panning out, i.e. a multifaceted collusion between the Russian government and Trump. The disinformation campaign that the Russian ran was pretty standard fare for them, and who they wanted to win was pretty clear.
