    "Congress ought to pass a law, and we already have Sen. Schumer on the Democratic side basically saying he doesn't want to pass a law. He really worries about the children unless it means Donald Trump would win, at which point he doesn't worry about the children because he can't let Trump win.

    "I think this will, in the end, remind people how irresponsible and how intellectually dishonest the Democrats have become."

    The US withdrawal from the UNHRC is perfect for Xi Jinping and China

    It appears the last holdout in the resistance to ‘human rights with Chinese characteristics’ has collapsed

    T
    he US withdrawal from the UN Human Rights Council is a gift to China’s leader Xi Jinping.

    Quitting the UNHRC won’t make it disappear.

    It opens a leadership vacancy that China is happy to fill.

    The Trump administration has stepped back to allow China the space to dominate the council unchallenged and advance its agenda to redefine human rights after the “China model.”

    As Xi pushes his authoritarian agenda on the international stage while undertaking the worst crackdown on human rights since the Tiananmen Massacre of 1989 back home, now is the time to stand up, not stand down.

    For the first time, China successfully sponsored a resolution in the UNHRC in June 2017, on

    prioritising development over other human rights.

    Human rights are universal, inalienable, indivisible, independent, equal and non-discriminatory.

    Your

    right to economic development is equal to your right to freedom of speech;

    China’s resolution deliberately undermined that principle.

    China
    followed that up with another resolution in March of this year, which focused on state sovereignty.

    It was widely criticised, with a UN expert calling it a “trojan horse” and the Swiss ambassador to the UN saying it “weakens fundamental human rights principles.”

    The US joined 12 other countries to vote no on the 2017 resolution but was the only country to vote against the March resolution.

    With the US quitting the UNHRC, it appears the last holdout in the resistance to “human rights with Chinese characteristics” has collapsed.

    Outside the council chamber,

    China has deployed procedural and budget rules to “wage war” on UN human rights bodies,

    with tactics ranging from cutting funding for UN offices,

    blocking NGOs from receiving accreditation,

    all the way down to attempts to block individual activists from UN buildings in New York.

    Xi Jinping may say that China will be a “keeper of the international order,”

    but what he means is that it

    will keep the exterior of the ins utions but get rid of the protection for human rights inside.

    Democrats just scored a massive upset in tonight’s Florida special election

    In a devastating blow to the President and his party,

    Democrats have scored yet another victory in a district previously held for decades by the Republican Party.

    Although officially a nonpartisan race, the de facto Democratic candidate Eileen Higgins, a marketing executive and community activist who helped organize efforts to reduce gun violence in Miami-Dade,

    defeated de facto Republican Zoraida Barreiro for a spot on the Miami-Dade County Commission,

    flipping the seat to Democratic control.

    The seat had been held by Barreiro’s husband, Bruno Barreiro, for 20 years.

    The win is even more remarkable because it gives Democrats a decisive 7 out of 13 seats, enough to control the County Commission for the first time in years.

    Senator Marco Rubio, a Republican from Miami, campaigned for Barreiro, and Barreiro’s husband poured at least $95,000 in contributions into her campaign. Many other lobbyists, developers and vendors also made sizable donations,

    House Republicans just dealt a devastating blow to war widows

    Under the current law, family of fallen military members lose part or all of their Defense Department Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) when they also receive Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

    As one cons uent wrote to Yarmuth, it

    reduces the surviving spouse’s benefits by an average of $1,250 a month or about $15,000 annually.

    Today Yarmuth tried to get the amendment through the House Budget Committee where it lost on a vote of 18 to 14 with all the Democrats and three Republicans voting for it.

    Rep. John Yarmuth
    @RepJohnYarmuth

    Truly disgraceful. A majority of @housebudgetGOP members just voted to defeat my amendment to help Gold Star families & surviving spouses.

    Instead, they protected tax breaks for big corporations & millionaires.

    You have to see it to believe it.

    Rep. John Yarmuth

    @RepJohnYarmuth

    Nine GOP members who voted no are cosponsors of legislation that would do the exact same thing as my amendment.

    They put tax breaks for millionaires ahead of ensuring that surviving military spouses receive the benefits they were promised.

    5:41 PM - Jun 21, 2018

    All the other no votes were the majority Republicans on the committee.

    He wanted to reduce the tax break Trump passed last December, which helps only the wealthiest Americans.

    Yarmuth’s plan would have taken one percent back from the corporations that benefited from the overhaul.

    Unsurprisingly,

    Republicans sided with corporations over (DEAD) veterans.

    “The fact that they could not bring themselves to set aside less than 1 percent of the trillions of dollars in tax cuts they just gave to millionaires and big corporations to protect survivors of military service members is a disgrace,”
