This is a massive black eye for the Lakers. They have been really, really bad for a while now and had a star publicly declaring they wanted to go. They showed to much hubris by thinking he would just walk to them when they have nothing good in place. Not only that, they probably offended him since they didn’t think he was worth it to trade for to guarantee they get him.
For that? They don’t even get a meeting. I don’t know how much this helps SA with Kawhi; one would think this would both scare and embarrass LA into doing a serious deal, but who knows how other teams view this and if will give them confidence.
But this is a big time black eye. They will likely land Lebron which will erase a lot of the stench, but doesn’t change the PG factor. It’s funny seeing Laker fans hate on PG now calling him “soft” and “scared of the big stage” but they were in love and bragging when they thought he was coming.
I will say KillaKobe hated PG the entire time so he gets props and can say whatever he wants; he never wanted PG

Is Lebron not commuting to the Lakers (yet) meaning he wants to see which way the wind blows on Laker commitments before he puts his name on their contract? Losing Leonard would be offset somewhat by Lakers remaining in the toilet.

PG did not take a meeting with LAL post midnight because they already met in a secret, undisclosed place (tampering). It'll come out. I hope the NBA curb stomps that bunch.
I think this rather complicates the picture, as you suggest. But I also think it really puts the skids on LeBron now until Kawhi does something. I can't see LeBron signing on with this Fakers lineup with no PG and the increasing possibility that the Spurs could keep Kawhi for a year or trade him east to a team emboldened by the PG decision.

Philly could be the real superteam, they are in a position right now to sign Lebron and trade for Kawhi keeping Simmons and Embiid. Would Kawhi really leave that team to join Ingram/Ball and a maxed out Randle?
Lebron really is in a pickle. If he goes to the Lakers he becomes a baby sitter. The only player the Lakers seem to be able to get interest from is a center who may not be able to play but 1/4th a season. I think his best shot actually would be to sign with Philly, and then Philly pull the Leonard trade. That would firmly put Lebron where he wants to be in regards to basketball.
You realize how difficult it is to play in Philly, right? LA fans are super casual relatively speaking. Though if you put in hard work with no BS (the old Kawhi) then Philly loves you.
It’s not even close. Lebron isn’t going to wait a year to bring on talent, though a one year deal for Cousins could change that and give a window for Kawhi next summer (I don’t see Cousins agreeing to a one year deal with no year two protections though).
Say the Lakers can keep Lonzo or Ingram and somehow also keep Randle on his cap hold (though probably can’t given the Deng deal). Everyone else, including Hart and Kuzma, is almost certainly traded. Is Lebron excited about adding Kawhi to THAT?
Or would Embiid and Simmons, assuming everything else is dealt away, more enticing? Likely means Mills and/or Green join too.
As a big Texas Tech fan, I did not think Zhaire was ready to make the jump. He really needs the right coach/team to continue his development. PATFO/Spurs would have been the ideal place for him. But he would have been on a CoJo developmental timeline.

If LeBron seems headed to/strongly considering Philly expect to hear that Ainge is reconsidering what Celtics can offer for Leonard. Which is as we've known the best case scenario for the Spurs this summer.

Will their dumb luck hold by still getting both LeBron and KL (the best of all worlds)?
Or will their staggering incompetence prevail by landing neither?
