Also, I don't believe PATFO was surprised by this news. I said last year that Manu was a lock to retire this summer based on his contract. Even if it turned out to be more of a coin-flip than that, there's no way anyone should have been caught unaware here. Manu didn't sign a contract suggesting he was going to stay, so not retaining Tony and keeping Forbes and Bertans over Anderson were all done with Manu's retirement in mind already. I even think they were done with Green's trade in mind. If anyone thinks the guard situation is suddenly dire, it's not. Or at least, it's where PATFO expected it to be.

Hopefully, they don't sign Crawford, but I fully expect them to pursue a steady PG to keep White honest and to provide ball-handling depth. There are candidates out there, including relative scrubs from Austin like Hanlan or Ledbetter. I wouldn't be surprised to see one or both of those in camp and one get a two-way. I still expect them to look to an older guy with NBA or at least Euroleague experience, though.

It was expected, but what a ty off season! The end of an era.

Thanks Manu for all the testicular for ude you gave the Spurs over the years over countless basketball battles. You were the ultimate winner and team player in a Hall of Fame basketball career and you will be sorely missed!

I see a dark future for Spurs fans for many years to come. The majority of the Spurs' fans were completely spoiled by having players of the caliber of Robinson, Duncan and Manu. Be ready for a rude awakening now that Manu is gone.

Derrick White needed the minutes tbh. I would have loved to see Manu come back another year but White needs the minutes and he was the likely candidate to get buried if Manu had stayed due to Pop's BS love affair with Forbes.

It's definitely the silver lining to this show offseason

I remember when the Spurs announced that Manu was coming over from Italy and watching grainy highlights of him dunking on dudes, blocking dudes way taller than him and watching this skinny 6'6" dude play with such a style that I had never seen before. I was an instant fan despite knowing that those videos were hyping Manu up. The dude lived up to the hype and much more. Who the knew that 16 years later he was going to be a first ballet HOFer and an NBA/Spurs legend.

I still remember the press conference and Manu holding up Avery Johnson's #6 jersey and there being a stink about it.

It's like I've been saying since 2015. The Spurs seem into deferred compensation nowadays. I'm glad they're not stretching this needlessly (in fact, they'll be done with Tim this year as well), but $2.5 Million this summer is not negligible considering their proximity to the tax. They have enough room to fill their roster, and that's it.

Also at folks thinking Manu was going to turn down that money because "he's not the kind of guy who's willing to be paid when he's not playing". This was the plan from jump-street, just as it was when Manu signed the one-and-one rMLE deal the year they got LMA.

At this point, it would be better for the team if Manu got to keep his money and the Spurs traded him and say Milutinov's rights for a $4-Million player. I have no idea whom that player could be, but that's the move to make at this point.
The only way for them to allow him to keep it is to waive his guaranteed contract. If they trade him, the other team is under no obligation to do so.

Manu retiring is probably the saddest news in all of Spurs history.

after the Kiwi mess and once Tony left, I highly doubted he would be back. Why would he? He isn't that tight with LMA don't know if he even really knows Derozen. I feel if Tony were still here fighting the good fight Manu would be too but now it just feels like a whole new era for real.

The Big Three era is officially over.

Manu poured his heart into the game for the Spurs and deserves his retirement.

    But man, this still sucks.

I mean, yeah, a team can be as underhanded as the CBA allows, but if the expectation is that Manu would get to keep his money, I don't see why that wouldn't be honored in the trade. It's not like the Spurs Org can't find ways to give Manu money. There should be no issue with cir vention of the cap either, because the Spurs always had the right to just not give Manu the money in the first place.

You're not wrong though that it's possible.
