The late 90's to early 00's were a low point in a lot of areas of pop culture. Remember how every other summer blockbuster was a war movie for a while because of Saving Private Ryan?

We Were Soldiers, Hart’s War, Windtalkers etc take an aging star to be a grizzled captain, throw in a young up and comer to question his authority, make sure there’s one really graphic bloody scene to show the “grim realities of war”, cash in, bro down.

The only good albums Nas made were in 94 and 96, his efforts after that are widely regarded as subpar at best, Jay’s best album was in 96, by 2000 he was doing Big Pimpin and went full pop, and Eminem’s work in that time is solid but not amazing, it stood out because it was released in such a godawful time for rap music.

Rock and Rap both hit their absolute cultural rock bottom in the 1998-2004ish era. There’s some good rap out there today, but if the Lil’ Xans and 6ix9ines of the world are the future, rap might reach it’s lowest point yet, even lower than the Master P/Juvenile/50 Cent/Nelly/Ruff Ryders era.

The bottom line is unless you are a young black kid lacking musical knowledge you are going to be aware of so much stuff far superior to rap/hip hop.

White guy living on a ranch in Wyoming, who grew listening to Roy Acuff, Ernest Tubb, Hank Williams, isn't going to think much of untalented black guys with no class.
