That was the last game vs v Lakers. This was a four quarter beat down from a hot shooting team

For right now, Pop says the Spurs are "defensively challenged". That's gonna happen when you lose good defenders such as Kawhi Leonard, Danny Green, Kyle Anderson and DeJounte Murray.
To what lenghts do you think Pop will go to protect his pet players tbh?

Had it been anyone else, I think Pop would have called into question their effort etc. bc he has done that in other occasions.

Here is Pop blasting his team for going through the motions in a 95-91 loss to the Bulls. https://www.foxsports.com/nba/story/...es-team-120916
Popovich said some of his players didn't bring any effort in the game.
“I don't remember playing tonight. No Knute Rockne speeches. It's your job. If you're a plumber and you don't do your job, you don't get any work,” Popovich said. “I don't think a plumber needs a pep talk. A doctor botches operations, and he's not a doctor anymore. If you're a basketball player, you come ready. It's called maturity. It's your job.”
We played 24 minutes again, as we have for about the last 10 games,” Popovich said. “We go through the motions in the first half. I think we shot one free throw in the first half. We shot four or so the second half.
“That's the disappointing part: We're not a very consistent team, and we haven't learned as a group that the game is 48 minutes. We also have some people playing very poorly.”You have to participate in your own recovery. Some players have to play better.”

Don't think LA and DMD can be coached the same harsh way as the big 3. Plus it's still early in the season I guess he's being patient. Not sure what else to think.

I was hoping for a regime change at the very end of last season. IF one of the major factors in Number 2's antics was PATFO and/or the crappy players/contracts that characterized their recent moves, then a new regime might have been able to smooth things over with Number 2. At the least, a new regime would have had an opportunity to be the ones to make the Number 2 trade (plus any other moves) and begin constructing a roster along their preferred lines. At this current trajectory, PATFO will probably be gone before the team is again capable of competing, leaving their successors hamstrung by the plethora of poor decisions that have resulted in this bizarre roster.
Great points, bc Kiwi is a mute and his team just went on a campaign to disparage the Spurs when things appeared beyond repair, we shall never truly know. I don't think things are ever one sided. Of course once Kawhi was fed up, it wasn't difficult for Uncle to puppeteer him away.

Yeah, this is why I mentioned to you in a chat last spring that, although I was sitting on the fence in the Pop/Number 2 conflict, IF Number 2 could force a regime change, then I would climb off the fence on his side. I fear this franchise is going down the Phoenix path - and I don't mean "rising from the ashes."

Hate to break it to him, but Walker and White won't be enough to save the team defensively. These issues could very likely still be there come March.

I understand wanting to remain relevant. A rebuild is not guaranteed to work like it did in 1999. Also, once you start being bad, you can't recruit FA and it becomes harder and harder to recruit talent again. I have seen it in other franchises.

I think in terms of coaching, Pop was special for the players that he coached and the teams that he had, and I appreciate him bc in the back of my mind I wonder if he's not going underappreciated in his old age just like sometimes I criticized the old big 3 when they looked really washed up.

Point is, I may complain about Pop on occasion, but I doubt that any coach could do better with this group. I don't like the roster they have built up, unfortunately. Murray was becoming my favorite of the bunch in the preseason and he got hurt. I merely saw just a little bit of Walker to get excited when he also got hurt.

The only problem with the win now, stay compe ive approach is that they need talent. They overpaid some guys, took this roster down a path where they find themselves. Even with Kawhi in the team, Pau and Paddy shouldn't have gotten those deals. Since they committed to staying compe ive, they need to look at trades IMO. If their defense remains this bad, they will be a bad team. They will win games against bad teams when their shooters heat up. Perhaps White and Walker coming back from injury and reducing Patty's minutes will be sufficient and should the Spurs stand pat, I imagine it's bc they are counting on reinforcements coming back from the injured list.

Standing pat for the very reason you express is my fear. Trades at PATFO's initiative are such a rarity that I don't expect them to change their spots - even this season. If Pop is looking at ANY statistical analysis, he must realize that the Patty would not be playable in the NCAA. Yet he continues to ride him hard. I personally believe that if Patty were replaced by another warm body, Forbes' defensive statistics would show the improvement that my eyes see.

Jeff McDonald: Also, let's recalibrate our definition of "suck." This still could be a playoff team and it wouldn't surprise anyone.

    Narrator: It surprised everyone

I feel the same. He competes very hard and shows a lot of effort. He makes a lot of good contests. Some people are probably really comfortable shooting over him cause his build and height but he's come a long way. I can't put him and Mills in the same breath anymore. Bryn is the realization of Mills tbh.

This particular SPURS team reminds me of the SPURS team prior to Timmy arriving on scene, Spurs were a bit better than average and could make the playoff's and get knocked out in the 1st rd.. To me LMA is David Robinson good enough to get you to the playoff's but not good enough to get you over the hump. --This is not a knock on LMA or anyone else on the roster just pointing out the comparisons as the current roster is drawn up.

David's teammates ween't exactly that great and you gotta realize the era he played in as well. Tim was added to a team with Robinson who still had a bit left but towards the end of his career. Without David, Tim doesn't win in 99 and 03. Robinson played against some very good teams. It's not like scrubs were putting us out of the playoffs.

Man, I miss Johnny Ludden. He used to give good insight into the team instead of being a blind homer.
