I agree the game has gotten a little boring. Not really agreeing with pop on everything though. Higher scoring doesn't necessarily mean better games. I actually enjoy defense and hard nosed basketball. Basketball should be a contact sport. The rules and the way the game is played actually makes it hard for teams to have a real rivalry.
    + 1
I do enjoy the 3 ball, sure.. but it's gone too far. I don't enjoy chuckfests where no one plays defense and everyone is looking like they are at shootaround.

Look at this zone defense. It makes you wonder, this is a real NBA game. This might as well be a high school game.

Personally agree about the modern game being less interesting. Still, wtf is Pop doing? Trying to prove a point?

"I'll build my team to shoot the fewest 3's and have the worst perimeter defense and still find a way to win."

they should restrict three point shots to the last 5 seconds of the shot clock. Make teams run offense or something. I have an even dumber idea of just capping the amount of three point shots per quarter like fouls.
After the first 15 3s in a half all others count for 2. If you still want to keep chucking after that, go ahead.

They changed the game to appeal to the most corporates and casuals as possible. That gets the TV deals and sponsorships. Ball go in hoop, yay cheer. Drink some beer

The growth of the 3pt shot is the best thing that could've happened to the NBA, especially in the super team era. It gives teams with less talent a chance of competing against any team. The 14th seed in the West is closer to the 1st seed than it is to the 15th. There's more parity now.
Oh, is that why Golden State has been losing to so many bad teams over the last 4 years, and not setting regular season win records and steamrolling through playoffs? Parity. Right.

I mean this isn’t 2K. You can’t just completely overhaul the roster in ONE season. Kawhi ed everything up...
Some of you guys sound like a drunken, unemployed bum complaining it's all his ex-wife's fault that he just lost another job.

Kawhi had absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the current Spurs roster. Nothing. Period.

Kawhi didn't hire any of the players on the roster. Pop did.

Pop built the Spurs roster, you delusional fruitcake.

ONE season you say. You are insane. You need counseling. Pop had TWENTY YEARS to plan for replacing every single player on the roster, every single season, as any responsible administrator would do, because injuries are so common.

Any competent administrator would have had candidates in mind to take Kawhi's place by this time last year, and would have had a serious plan to get one of them. Just in case. Not that you'd expect a Kawhi clone, but if you were serious about what you were doing, you could damn sure find somebody. So the team could continue without collapsing.

Steph Curry is out. So, I guess you'd say the Warriors must have lost by 39 to the Raps tonight, like we lost to the Wolves. Except, no, they didn't. They lost, but they took it to overtime. They have a good roster. They are still compe ive.

    Because they have good management.

    We don't.

I have had the opposite idea in my head for awhile. I say the 3 point shot should only count for the the first 10 seconds of the shot clock. Anything after that counts as 2 no matter where it’s from. Nothing worse than seeing solid D for 23 seconds only to see a sneak out 3 and the last second. It punishes the D for not playing 24 seconds of perfect defense. That’s too much to ask with the way the game is called today and with today’s shooters.

Then, let the all 3s count in the last 6 minutes of the 4th qtr.
You and K have interesting ideas on the subject. I don’t like changing the rule in the 4th quarter, but I would like to see some experimentation along the lines you suggest. Only potential problem is that it essentially creates 2 shot clocks for officials to have to monitor and review. But something needs to be done to restore some real strategy and plays back into the game.

The rest of the league just caught up to the 3pt shooting this year, smart ass.

The 3 point explosion has been insane. The spurs shoot 24.6 threes a game this season, 29th in the league. The average is 31.3 threes a game. 24.1 threes a game was the average just 3 years ago and the most a team took was 31.6.Go back to the 2013 season, and the 2019 spurs would be taking the most threes a game in the entire league - the average was 20 threes a game and the most a team took was 23.1

That's a post from some guy on Reddit that stood out to me.

Yeah it’s definitely not perfect, just a rough idea. My idea for reviewing whether it was off in time would be just like they do now with the toe on the 3pt line review. Check it during a timeout or between quarters.

Well Pop, if "There's no basketball anymore" then it is probably time for you to retire. You are getting out coached too damn often this season by younger coaches. You have owned the 4th quarter your whole career but, now our guys seem to look at halftime as the end of the game. The players honestly look like they are tuning you out. You spend too much time ing about nothing. Your end of game press conferences show that you are still an arrogant old cuss who enjoys belittling others. You are still living in the past, i.e., the days of George Mikan. Even the old Boston Celtics after Mikan (days of Bill Russell, Bob Cousy, KC and Sam Jones, Bill Sharman, Tom Heinsohn, Satch Sanders, John Havlicek, etc. played fast ball and shot long set shots as they called them back then. Lighten up and work your magic and get this team back on track. If the loss of your wife is making things rough then take a leave of absence for a few weeks. You've earned that. But, don't let it wear the team down. Don't let President Trump get under your skin. Don't go after the KaWhitter in the press. He and the Raptors are doing fine and they're not worrying about you. Any of us can watch this team and see the problems. There is no chemistry. There isn't much in the desire department and there damn sure ain't NO defense. Get the guys back in the gym and work on the basics. And get them in shape. Way, way, way too many times as our guys are getting back on defense (slowly I might add) the opposing ball handler just runs full speed into the paint and scores a quick layup or slam dunk. Just do it, Pop.

But Kawhi was part of the plan and they were more successful against GSW doing than any other team doing so..

Things change when you lose Kawhi for a year and he sabotage the franchise and his value yet they still competed and were in prime position to make noise..
Kawhi was part of the plan and...? The next season they didn't re-sign Dedmon Simmons Lee. And this season, Kyle Anderson.

What was the rest of THE plan?

Giving Mills and Gasol big contracts?

Surrounding Kawhi with LMA+bunch of d-league players +old guys like Pau?

    Yeah...What amazing plan, Pop.

I agree with Pops that the game has gone ugly with too much emphasis on the 3. Obviously he's talking in frustration because of Spurs' current below .500 record. And he doesn't have the personnel to stop the outpouring of 3's, thanks mainly to Kiwi bailing out which caught him by surprise and unprepared. Pops originally tried to counter, with athletic defensive guard DJ to disrupt Curry or CP3, selecting another athletic defensive guard LW4, etc. I think Spurs would have countered successfully if Kiwi did not bail out. In a dreamworld, if we had: DJ, Green, Kiwi, Gay, LMA we could've competed against any 3-loving teams, even the Dubs.

Pop's points are valid. Plus the game sucks when your team is full of has beens and never will be's. The game which is passing Pop by is not a good product any more. 3 balling, over-reffing, and weak owners have wrecked the league. I wish they would simply let players compete and be physical. These are among the most talented athletes in the world (not counting the spurs, ha), so let them play. I used to play in multiple fantasy leagues every year, and these days the game just sucks and is a shadow of what it used to be. Always a Spur fan but oh my how the wheels are falling off.

Well it was the beautiful game that brought down the banana boat dream team packing. And I was really hoping before that it would again be the Spurs to put a stop on the 3-balling. But then puking Kiwi bailed out on us. Gone are the big 3, and I don't see anyone in Spurs uniform as proper heir, not until Demar becomes the best defensive player of the team. Maybe Murray if he could master the outside shots, and his inside game, but it's a long way to go. Or maybe LW4, but it remains to be seen. Ugh I hate to follow another team, but this is so frustrating

yep, lost season. Next year Murray will be playing, Pau will be gone, and hopefully some new faces in their 20s with ability. Realistically, the only building block the spurs have right now is their injured point guard. This is definitely a time of uncertainty, which is no fun.

I hope it's a dramatic learning experience enough on the FO to bring athletic 3D players, instead of short, un-athletic, no-defense ball-chuckers, and has been's.

Unfortunately, I don't think so. The last 3 off seasons have seen many costly errors and brought such limited marginal players to the roster which left just about every spurs fan and pundit scratching their heads. Over half of the roster is pure garbage, undeniable. I am a pessimistic sardonic crotchety SOB these days. Like the coach.
