The cost of college tuition has gone up 300-400% in the last 35 years, has the value gone up proportionally?
Main driver is states withdrawing education spending. You may not consider it a crisis, but millions of college students carrying college debt they can't repay has economic and social consequences -- people don't make as much money, don't buy houses and cars, don't start families, become a drain on their parents' resources for retirement, fail to save money for their own retirement, go without insurance and health care, have related health and mental issues.
This doesn't happen in other rich countries, is there some good reason it *must* happen here?
Seems grossly inefficient from an economic standpoint. Isn't there some point at which debt becomes a a painful and unnecessary drag on growth?
It's a truism that debt that cannot be paid will not be paid -- why should the system be set up to make irresponsible lenders whole?
At some point, bad debt has to be written off.
